hotchkis upper control
« on: December 25, 2011 - 08:57:52 PM »
I am debating on the hotchkis uppers and the strut rods. For now i am sticking with rally wheels so I know performance cornering is limited to the crappy bfg`s  .but does that upper relocation bracket really make a world of difference compared to a normal tubular arm $300 vs $700. also does the strut rod with spherical ends create more pot-hole jarring sounds than it is worth .I want to corner but I do not want it to feel like there is no cushion at all!!  In the future I plan on larger wheels as I just completed the rear relocation kit for future wheel width issues.

by relocating the upper control arm pivots so they are level the suspension does not change castor as it travels vertically so yes it makes sense & I have no idea why they are mounted on an angle

I have the Hotchkis upper control arms, and both Hotchkis sway bars, 1" torsion bars, and Bilstein shocks and I made my own strut rods. The ride is fine! Not rough at all.
Here is what I did.

Yes, the Hotchkis design has a lot of merit to its layout. If you like to corner fast or drive hard, they will make a difference. Where their layout really shines is at the higher end of suspension travel. It is at these levels that they demonstrate more consistent, predicatable performance that will require less steering wheel effort to keep things pointed in the right direction. A regularly mounted tubular arm just won't show the same benefit.

If you simply cruise your car to the local show and shine and and baby it there and back to avoid rock chips, you may never push it hard enough to see a benefit. If you want increased alignment capability to provide the biggest benefit in handling for the least amount of cost, offset upper arm bushings may be the ticket.

If you're somewhere between these two extremes, there may be some benefit, but the more causal you drive, the less noticeable the changess will be while pushing things hard will demonstrate more benefit.

The angled mounting that is part of the stock mount is anti-dive geometry. Back in the day when ride rates were noodle soft, adding anti-dive to the front suspension prevent the nose from doing a swan dive when the brakes were applied. Yes, they still dive some with this anti-dive built in, but it is much less than would be for a flat layout. Race vehicles typically sacrifice the anti-dive for more linear travel because the increased spring and shock rates are enough to resist the nose-dive motion. You can increase anti-dive more to provide further resistance, but doing so creates more radical angles in the dynamic geometry and increases the potential for binding a component.

Thanks guys, I have the 1.06 bars and billstein`s already here,I guess I am going to pull the trigger on the hotchkis stuff.sway bars also.I guess it makes it harder to judge the effects of adding these components ,since I havent driven one of these cars in about 15 years!!!! So driving the wifes 08 r/t may have a hand in upgrading also!  As always a quick answer from this website. Enjoy the new year.

If you keep an eye on ebay hotchkis puts their blems on there, and you can get a decent deal.  Late last year I picked up a set for about $550 shipped.

I got mine off this E-Bay seller. I phoned him off of E-Bay and got a better deal. He was great with me. Actually there is a member here that know's him personally and lives near him, can't remember who it was though?
