General info on 727 to 833 swap.
« on: December 26, 2011 - 03:33:28 PM »
I am collecting parts for my 383ci 72 Challenger,(the motor is 1970) on reading through the furum I am trying to find info on the clutch dia size and the number of teeth on the starter ring.

So far I have collected a 833 4 speed, and Hurst shifter and lever, the connector rods, pedal box, shifter mounting plt & transmission tunel hump are all new from Brewer.

apart from my qestion of clutch dia., I know the carpet will not fit, but will the auto consol? also anyone have a picture of the pedel box installed?

Cheers,

you can use either clutch setup , the 130 tooth flywheel & Alum belhousing or the 143 tooth flywheel & Iron belhousing , there are reproduction belhousings for  the 130 system .
Either way youuse the same clutch disc , it will be an 11" disc with either 23 or 18 spline hub to match the trans , the clutch pressure plate is unique to the different systems though

Progress is coming on on my 4speed conversion. I have fitted the pedal box, made a lot easier by dimples in the Firewall so I could drill out for the Bracket fixing holes.

My next task is clearance aperture for the 833 box to be installed. has anyone got a template for cutting a the clearance hole?? I have acquired a transmission hump from Brewers.

Cheers,

I generally set the hump on the floor , mark around it & cut about 1" inside of the lines

I hope you don't mind me adding another question in here.  I'll be doing a 904 to 833 swap and was wondering what needs to happen in terms of wiring.  Is it just the clutch to ignition switch and speedometer cable?  What exactly needs to get changed?

I assume you would have the same wiring issues with a 727 to 833.

Thanks,
David
ps if you want me to post this topic separate just PM me and I will

you have a 3 pin plug for the auto trans , with the 4 spd the 2 black go to the reverse light switch on the trans & the brown wire would go to ground through the clutch switch if you can find one .

I have the option of a used factory 383-440 cast B-body 11" Bell housing, but are told I will need a 143 tooth flywheel, but on the Brewers site the unit they call up for a 72 Challenger is a 10.5" using a 130 tooth Flywheel. What is the 11" or 10.5"??, What do you think??

the cast bell needs the 143 tooth flywheel
the alum bel needs a 130 tooth flywheel
both can use the 11" disc  but the pressure plate is unique to each flywheel , still I would use the larger disc either way

Just an update on progress and another question, I have installed the new pedal box and mocked up the connecting rods on the 833, now I have the offer of a big block bell housing that mates to the 833 but it has a date stamp code of 1977, I didn't think that combo was available that late, also the Bearing dia is given as 5" dia??? perhaps an error on measuring.
Cheer,
