there are 3 brg retainer sizes , 4.35, 4.80 , & 5.20 if it is the 5" one it is either a small block bel or a modfied big block one for use with the OD trans

Is your 383 a HP motor? Just wondering because I wanna point out to check the back of the crank to make sure it is drilled for a 4 speed

It is a 383 motor, I am collecting all the parts and fitting the pedal box etc.. my local transmission shop will do the actual swap and he's an old school Mopar guy and aware of the input shaft to crank issue... thanks for your comments. If the Bell housing I am looking at is a 5" B/retainer and assuming a B/B can I still use it or would I have to machine a 5" to 4.8" sleeve?

i think it's either a measurement mistake or it's a smallblock 833od bell housing.

hi, need to see the front side. i can tell a 727 right away. if you have the housing try putting on the block. then check all the bolt holes. as far as resizing the bore it can be done but its machine shop dollars compared to the cost and availability of the right one.

If it's not the correct bearing retainer size could I still mate a 833 which has a 4.8"dia retainer bearing to this 5" Bellhousing? In other words is it the bearing retainer that positions the Bell housing to the gearbox?
Cheers,

the bearing retainer HAS TO match the bellhousing. it keeps the tranny center to the housing. you can not rely on the bolts alone. and the bearing retainers are not interchangable because they also hold the front bearing in place. the only way to use that bell housing is to take it and your bearing retainer to a machine shop and they will make a spacer to fit your retainer. you will have to way out your cost. machine shop cost verses the proper housing.

You can machine down the 5.125 front brg retainer on a lathe to 4.80 for the std big block belhousing , it is the easiest way to match it up

I do appreciate everyone's help.... I think my last thing I need info on is, if the cast B.Block bell housing take either a 10.5" or 11" flywheel??  how does the starter motor work with the different diameters, it cannot engage on two different flywheel Dia's ??

Cheers,

I believe that is a small block bel in the picture , it drops down to straight & too far on the right side for a big block .
there are 2 belhousings & 2 flywheels , the iron bel has to be used with a 143 tooth flywheel , the alum bel is used with a 130 tooth flywheel , the only exception to this is the lakewood blastshield , it has a cup that bolts in with two optional holes for either flywheel
