does this make sense?
« on: December 26, 2011 - 09:27:48 PM »
Slow day at work and read appox 94 threads on gauge issues. My 74 challenger has rallye gauges. The speedometer is not working  but odometer works.Research tells me i need a speedometer.Gas gauge goes to 3/4 maybe so its the maybe float or ground.  Tac not working but  after previous owner installed electronic ignition, says it no longer worked.Clock needs restoring. So oil, amp and temp gauges not working. The previous owner installed after market oil and amp gauges which work.He did not do a temp gauge. So if i replace the original oil, temp and amp gauges with restored pieces , can i use the wiring from the aftermarket stuff to the restored stock units?Seems logical but logic and old cars sometime do not mix.Long post for a short ( no pun intended) question.

Not trying to be a smart ass... but your question was nearly impossible to read and then when I DID finally make sense of it, it didn't really tell me much.

That said, you need to provide more details.

Are you're old gauges verified dead or are they just disconnected?

Water, oil, and fuel all get power from the same stepped-down source. If fuel is working... maybe the senders / wiring on the other two are just bad. Have you checked?

Anyway... Really hard to diagnose from just "gauge ng"

I read it twice and wanted to help, but also had trouble understanding what you need help with.  Could you try to explain in a little more details?   :)
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

slow day at work and read appox 94 threads on gauge issues. my 74 challenger with rallye gauges, speedo ng, odometer works, need speedo. check.gas gauge goes to 3/4 maybe float or ground. check.  tac ng but p.o. installed electronic ignition so a easy fix i think.clock ng. who cares .just kidding.so oil, amp and h20 gauges ng.but the p.o. installed after market oil and amp gauges which work.why he did not do a  h2o gauge, good question.so if i replace the original oil, amp gauges , can i use the wiring from the aftermarket stuff to the refurbished stock units.seems logical but logic and old cars sometime do not mix. long post for a short ( no pun intended) question.

Translated as best I can:

Speedo = Odometer functional, Speed indicator nonfunctional. Proposed solution: Replace entire speedo.
Gas Gauge = Full tank reads 3/4. Proposed solution: Check ground/Replace float
Tachometer = Non functional. Previous owner installed electronic ignition (74's came with this standard).
Clock = Non functional. Not an issue
Oil pressure = Non-functional. After market installed. Proposed solution use aftermarket wiring with original.
Amp Meter = Non-Functional. After market installed. Proposed solution use aftermarket wiring with original.
Temperature = Non-Functional.

For the Temperature gauge, I would first make sure the car has a thermostat installed.  It is not unusual that these have been removed.  I recommend a Stant 185* if it's missing.  Make sure you drill a small hole in it.  Next I'd check the sending unit for potential issues.

Clock you'll either need to get a conversion kit to quartz, buy a rebuilt/NOS one.  I don't think the electromechanical originals are serviceable.

sorry guys, just a little attempt at making light of the small stuff.Jamiez  did translate my convoluted question. the old gauges are indeed dead and was wondering if i buy restored units is there any  reason the wiring to the after market units would not on the restored ones. again thanks

Assuming your current oil gauge isn't a mechanical one and is being signaled from an oil sender unit like stock, the only issue I could see woud be that your new gauge doesn't require a step-down like the old one. The originals take, I believe, 5v, not 12v.

Amp meter should work as that just takes direct 12v current.

If you write regular sentences, with capitals and punctuation, it will be easier to read your posts.

I'm guessing your voltage limiter went bad and fried the original gauges.  They were replaced with after market gauges and you want to hook up the originals with the connections from the after market gauges.  If this is correct in what you are saying, you can't hook the factory gauges to all of the after market connections.  As was stated the voltage is different in the gauges.  If you are getting rebuilt gauges just hook them up with the factory wiring. The factory gauges are electric.  They are not mechanical.

Thanks.  Still trying to work out issues with the six pack setup.Waiting on a restored speedometer, then check the wiring to other stock gauges.I will certainly need help soon.
