Lifter bores
« on: January 01, 2012 - 06:23:51 PM »
While taking my 340 apart I found what looks like a counter bore on the lifter bores. I've not been inside any other mopars so I don't know if this is normal but it doesn't look normal to me. :dunno:   Is this to accommodate a roller lifter? Thanks.

Don't look back, I might be gaining on you.

Looks like a countersink-counterbore.  I don't know if it's factory or not, but my guess is that the counterbore is just to clean up the edge (from the casting) and the countersink is so the lifter just drops in.  I can't imagine there are more than a couple thousandths of an inch (.002"?) clearance for the lifter, so it wouldnt want to drop into a normal counterbore.
mmmmm.... Mopar.... *drool*

looks normal to me , it should trap a bit of oil there to keep the lifter lubed

Good deal.  I was thinking the same about cleaning up the edge at the beginning of the lifter bore. Makes sense to carry a little oil for the lifters there also. I'm really enjoying tearing down this motor. It has been a long time since I did a build and I had forgotten how much I enjoy inspecting and analyzing every little bit and piece. Thanks for the info guys. Should I do an engine build thread? Haven't seen one, but hey why not. :grinyes:
