Challenger T/A Exhaust

It's been a while since I've been here.  I was just reading the Hemming Muscle Machines article about the AAR and TA cars.  Never thought of it before now but...  What was the reason for the side exit exhaust on the homologation production cars?  Was is just a styling queue on the street cars or were the cars lowered and the pipe couldn't fit over the axle well?

Just curious.  Thanks.

The rear of the AAR's and T/A's was accually higher then the other production cars.  The side exit exhaust required extra room to prevent hitting the pavement.

The T/A and AAR exhaust was designed to complement the look of the TransAm series cars.  It was a styling thing more an anything.
BTW those two cars are mine in Hemmings
