 Hey Drew, Good to see you around.

Couple of things I've picked up on, disconnect the tachometer if he has one, a bad one can ground the ign.
As stated before low battery or voltage drop in the wiring will cause these aftermarket ignitions not to work, if the battery checks good try a jumper wire from the battery to provide temporary power.
I recently was troubleshooting a GM truck that would shut down after heating up, turned out to be a bad coil wire. Pull the coil wire from the distributor & see if it will arc 1/8" to ground when cranked(make sure no gas is around)

Good Luck

You say hooked up Distributor and Coil only right? No box? Sounds like MSD stuff hooked up incorrectly. Need to know EXACTLY what your pal did and which wires he hooked up. Asking a question like this here will get you 90 different answers and out of those 90, you might sift through and see ONE (1) that worked.

It is probably that little unit hiding on the back of the Dash cluster for the ignition. I am not sure if you need a box but I would think yes you do if you want it to work as designed. I am surpeised he did not install a HEI one wire set-up I have one in the garage but don't plan on using it for a 440.

wade, thanks for the welcome! I may not be able to actually get hands on with the car since I am still on my recovery from my back surgery but I will try to get some photos from him to see what he is running.

Thanks to everyone for the inputs. I'm going to try to get photos so that you can see what I am working with. I will keep you all updated.

Drew

He sent the unit back and they said that the dust and coil tested just fine. If the manual suggest using the ballast I wonder why the tech line said to bypass it. They even said to put the two wires from the one side of the ballast and just twist them together and splice them to the wires from the other side of the ballast.

The tech probably meant to put the wires together as a test to see if the ballast was bad. I doubt he
wanted you to run this set up permanently with twisted wires and all.  :dunno:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

The last time I experienced something like this blowing some compressed air through the carbs fuel line cleared it up.
Seems there must of been some trash keeping the needle valves open causing it to flood.

I think that it may be a very weak spark. Maybe not enough to ignite the fuel. I got small sparks but not a good popping one
