Charger won't start
« on: January 08, 2012 - 12:28:47 AM »
Ok guys and gals, my buddy here just put an MSD coil and distributed in his 69 charger. It started for a couple days but would not start after being driven and getting hot. Now the car won't start at all. It is getting air and fuel but we can't find spark. With the key in the on position the coil has power to both sides which seemed odd to me. The guys at MSD told him to bypass the ballast resister and put the wires together. Can anyone help me out and give me some steps to try and help him out. He also made the plug wires too. Thanks everyone

Drew (sleepy)

If the unit is new he can get a RMA # and return it for a new unit.

He sent the unit back and they said that the dust and coil tested just fine. If the manual suggest using the ballast I wonder why the tech line said to bypass it. They even said to put the two wires from the one side of the ballast and just twist them together and splice them to the wires from the other side of the ballast.

I read solid core plug wires cannot be used with a MSD ignition system.

Sometimes a ground strap off of the coil directly to the firewall cures this issue.

off another forum.

 Make sure you have:

1. Good battery, more important good grounding with the negative term and engine block.

2. Good 12 Volts to the coil. If this is the electronic dist set up, ditch the ceramics.

3. Hook the wires up as directed. Mine was black to ground, red to hot side of coil and orange to negative side. It also needed to use the hook up kit that came with the dist.

4. Recheck your spark with key on, coil wire out should be 12volts.

5. Ensure timing is on so things will come to life.

Sounds like you have that.  :clueless:

Making sure the engine was properly timed something about the ingnition only generating spark for 20deg of turn. Making sure you have a new cap and rotor. Unplug the spark plug wires and replug them. Swaping coil with another coil if you have it and testing.

Just thought of this, he doesn't have to have a box like the 6al or anything does he? I think he is running just the MSD coil and dist
