Opinions on TCI transmissions
« on: January 18, 2012 - 04:52:06 PM »
Just looking for opinions/experiences good or bad with TCI built transmissions.  I am looking into the drag race trans #112 100.  I have a new trans brake already that I would install myself.

Depends where he is.  I am in Saskatchewan. There is a highly recommended local guy who actually did a tranny for my 1500 ram, who really had nothing good to say about TCI.  He is a little steep on labour rates, but very good at what he does.

I can get a TCI locally also for $1450, which is why I even thought about going that route, and to get mine rebuilt would be around $1500, but would supposedly be better than the TCI one. And then, of course for $3600, he could build me a bulletproof trans, with billet parts, etc.

I guess it would be nice to do that, but money is an issue.  I want a good tranny, but with the bare essentials I guess.

So really for 500 hp, what would be the neccessary upgrades?  Bolt-on sprage, billet servos, billet 4 clutch high drum, ..........

WOW  :wow: You need NOT spend $1500 to get a 727 to handle 500 HP! Shouldn't cost you more than around $600ish.

I too was under the impression that a good 727 would be well over a grand. Terry, what
upgrades do you recommend and/or are you figuring in 600$? I am interested and in need !
If I cant fix it, it's broke

500 HP is not that much for a 727 to handle. how much HP/torgue did a 426 Hemi have? All the Hemi Torqueflite had was a wider direct drum with a wider 2nd gear band and one extra clutch for third. It had higher VB pressures. You can build a 727 with stock clutches,a good shift kit or bought VB and you are good to go. The main thing is to have the kickdown set properly to have the pressure rise where it needs to be. A bolt in sprag does NOTHING to increase the low sprag holding capacity,it is really for repairing a case that the outer sprag race has busted the case out or spun. I have three race cars out there that I sponsored (Max wedge cars) running mid nines and low 10's and all they have is an increased direct drum clutch capacity (third gear) a good quality 2nd gear band and a Cheetah manual valve body. Good pressure rise (increase clamping force on the clutches and bands) is the most important thing in handling bigger HP engines. when you get up to the 600 HP +, then you need to spend some  money on Ultimate sprags,LBA valve bodies ,billet direct drums etc.

Notice the TAC sticker in front of the rear tire.

Here is another one of his cars that I did the 727 in.

Clay and his wife Rosie. Rosie's blue car on the left had a tree 6 inches in diameter growing up through it at a salvage yard when they found it and saved it,that is the kind of people they are, they love these max wedge cars.

This transmission is just a stock rebuild with a manual valve body on it. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TCI-112100/ Just wanted you to be clear on what you would be getting. Don't let the TCI part influence you so much.

Yeah, that's what this guy out here was telling me. I also talked to a tech at TCI(he didn't say much), then I e-mailed them asking for a spec sheet or list of all internal work, upgrades, etc. on that tranny.  E-mail back said,....... "  I don’t have a spec sheet per say, however that trans is a Competition 727 built with Red Eagle nitrided race clutches, Kolene steels, hardened shafts, and full manual reverse shift valve body.

The guy out here I've been talking to has mentioned stuff like 4 clutch planetary, billet drum, wider band/band strut, high ratio shift lever, oiling mods, billet servos etc.  fancy sounding stuff and maybe unnecessary, but for $1200-$1500 not bad.

My brother had his trans built for $700, and he was pushing 475hpmotor..600hp with nitrous in a 4x4 van.  I certainly can't see why a good rebuild with band/clutch upgrades, and a few other tweaks here and there, wouldn't be good enough for me and my 500 horses.  That was my thinking also, was the 440's and Hemi's that these trannies were behind stock.

Even the tranny in my car now(not sure of miles), but other than some smelly and slippy, it held up fine. It didn't blow a sprag or drum, and it took some pretty hard abuse this summer. I think my tires took most of the abuse though.

But yeah,  I  was thinking $800-$1200 to build it for the power I'm running now, and it only has to last a couple years, and then I'm hopefully doing the tub, narrowed dana,  900 hp small block with blower , etc. and then $$$$$ on a tranny.

Bull Hockey! There are no "hardened shafts" in that transmission! red eagle clutches and kolene steels do not add up to the price that they are asking for that trans. That guy probably knows nothing about transmissions, he probably reading off a computer screen.

That's exactly what it seemed like.  I mean, if someones building me a tranny, they should be able to tell me  exactly what's in it, and part numbers, especially if they are claiming it can handle up to 1100 hp :roflsmiley:

It seems like $1200 is about the going rate out here for a good rebuild..better bands/clutches/steels,etc. with some minor, but important upgrades, oiling mods, etc.

So would you be able to give me a list or idea of certain parts that I should make sure I am getting. And what upgrades are neccessary.  I don't even mind spending a little extra for some parts that aren't neccessary, but won't hurt.

Better yet, build me one and bring it with you next time you come to Saskatoon.
