anyone replace a blend door actuator in a 05 Suburban?
« on: January 20, 2012 - 10:16:51 PM »
Our family Suburban blows ice cold , no heat. I belive it's the blend door actuator as the engine warms up fine. I did smell a slight electrical motor smell.  :eek4:
Anyone know where it is and what I have to take off to get to it? :pullinghair:

I had to replace mine on my 2004 silverado 2500HD. if it is in the same area, it is located in up from the floor, right smack dab in the center. Basically middle of the hump area. i watched our shop mechanic at the farm change it out. It looked like a real pain, you will need some long extensions to reach up in there.

Ya it's the same pickup or Suburban.
So you can get at it from the bottom without taking the dash off? I have a console that needs to come out first I assume. :pullinghair:

Ya that's where I started first. Thanks though.
Weird thing is it had lots of heat tonight? I'll check the fluid level in the morning. To dang cold and dark now. It took longer than normal to heat up, then it went cold while at a stop light, then hot again?
Weird dumb thing!

There are 2 temp mode door actuators, one for left and one of right temp controls. Right side is the acuator on the top center, left is the one on the bottom center,

I also found this technical service bulletin that may apply if you have HVAC codes stored.

2005 Chevy Truck Suburban 1/2 Ton 4WD V8-5.3L VIN T
Vehicle Level  Heating and Air Conditioning  Air Door  Air Door Actuator / Motor  Technical Service Bulletins  All Technical Service Bulletins  A/C - Ticking Noise From Instrument Panel/DTC's Set

A/C - Ticking Noise From Instrument Panel/DTC's Set

Bulletin No.: 06-01-38-003

Date: April 27, 2006

TECHNICAL

Subject:
Intermittent Ticking Noise from I/P, Poor A/C Performance, HVAC DTCs B0229, B0414, B0424, B3770 (Reprogram HVAC Control Module)
Models:
2004-2006 Cadillac Escalade Models
2004-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe
2004-2006 GMC Sierra Models, Yukon Models
with Air Conditioning (RPOs CJ2, CJ3)

Condition

Some customers may comment on one or more of the following concerns:

^   Intermittent ticking/clicking noise from the instrument panel.
^   Recirculation mode does not work or Air Conditioning (A/C) system performance is poor during high ambient temperatures.
^   Unable to control the driver side temperature.
^   Unable to control the passenger side temperature.
^   Unable to change the front system modes.
Cause

This condition may be caused by the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) actuators that may hunt for the correct commanded position. This cycling may cause a clicking or ticking noise.

An overtravel of the HVAC system control doors may cause one or more of the concerns listed above. If an overtravel occurs, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set, and the door will go to a preset default position. When a system door defaults, that door will stay at the default position until the DTC is cleared. After the DTC is cleared, the door will operate properly until the overtravel condition re-occurs.

The table lists the HVAC system doors and the DTC associated with it.

Correction

Technicians are to perform the normal diagnostic procedures in SI for these concerns. If diagnostics show that the HVAC system door(s) travel below 5 counts (out of the lower range) or above 250 counts (out of the upper range), then update the software calibrations in the HVAC control module. The new calibrations were made available to dealerships as part of TIS2000 incremental satellite update version 2.5, which was broadcast to dealers in February 2006.

The new calibrations have been updated to compensate for the actuator overtravel condition, the actuator hunting and the ticking/clicking noises. The new calibrations effectively eliminate the codes listed above, the default position of the doors associated with the DTCs and opens up the feedback position value. The new calibrations should not be used unless the vehicle has one or more of the customer concerns listed above or a DTC listed above has been set. The new calibrations will not correct any other DTC or NC system performance concern.

Thanks for that! I have read something similiar. I don't hear any clicking noise. I'll take it over to my buddy's that has a scanner and see if any codes come up.

When mine started to mess up, it was summer an i couldnt figure out why the driver side was blowing hot air an the passenegr side was cold air.  I soon learned that i could shut off my vehicle and it would reset itself for a day or so, until i could get it changed. Expensive little part!

Ya mine seems to be working fine now? :clueless: I know when it gets really cold like around 0F ( we just had almost a week of that)the CD player and the heater controls ( they are digital/electronic) go wacky?  Once they warm up they seem ok? The temperature problem is not that only one duct works they all don't work? That's why I suspected the blend door? :dunno: I'll try pulling the fuse and reseting it next? I've read about that online?

Cool thanks, but it seems to be working OK again? :dunno: Something tells me it won't be long till it screws up though? Also there is no heat going to the rear and a google search tells me there is some modual that fails around the passenger side rear wheel well that is most likley the culprit? I'll PM you the vin when the wife gets home from work with it. Thanks! I bought it out of Texas, so it's an American truck not Canadian? Maybe it just can't take the cold? :stirpot:
