Barrett Jackson 1974 Challenger value!
« on: January 23, 2012 - 07:44:07 AM »
Anybody see this auction? My jaw just about hit the floor. 2 guys must have really wanted this car! I guess not everything was in the toilet this year at BJ Auction. So much for the theory that these cars will only bring about $30k nicely done.

This car sold about 20 minutes earlier than the 74 Challenger

Objects sold on mirrors are closer to crazy value than they appear. BJ isn't the "Price guide"....

 :iagree:

You can't calculate prices by what you see cars sell for at auction.  The owner himself could have bid it up and bought it back.

Judging by the guys reaction that bought the car, there is no way he was the owner. He seemed overly excited to be the high bidder.

I think the "matching numbers, complete nut and bolt restoration" has a lot to do with it... Particularly if it's professionally done.

I also agree, it's not accurate to value a car based on Barrett Jackson auction prices.

It seems that Big Blocks, Customs, and highly detailed E-bodies brought the most $$.  the AAR listed looked like it was a decent survivor, but probably needed some detailing for more value.  the '74 looked super clean, which after a rotisserie resto, it should!

One AAR i think brought close to $99K.  But the majority of AAR's and T/A's were definately undervalued.

so, for your surfing enjoyment, here are Thursday thru Sunday's E-body results:

Oh, the lone Gran Coupe (BP23N0E) brought $44K for a non-numbers matching 383 4-spd car that was de-badged to look like a 'cuda.  IMHO, it could have brought more if some good attention had been spent on it.

$50k!  :faint:

Yeah, I think a couple people got a little crazy with that one. It's a clean car, and actually as an original '74 360 4 speed its probably more rare than even some of the earlier T/A cars. But, that usually doesn't matter with a '74.

The ultra clean resto job drove the price up for sure, but outside the B-J auction setting I'm guessing it wouldn't have brought much more than $35k. It's pretty crazy what can happen with auction prices if a couple of bidders really get their hearts set on something. I'd bet there's going to be some buyer's remorse on that deal.

Yeah I thought for a minute it was Quapmans, but he has a different stripe on his.

I didn't think wood grain wheels were still available in 74, and based on the pictures it doesn't have a console.

Oh and the bumper guards are missing :)

They weren't... and that's not a real Mopar steering wheel anyway. I believe it's made by Grant.

Such a nice car, he should have gotten a real rimblow!

I just looked at the picture of the engine comp.  There is a lot wrong in there and it isn't very clean.

wrong battery
wrong plug wires
plug wire holders not painted engine color
wrong rad cap
generic hose clamp on heater hose and fuel line
wrong color oil dipstick(I think)
blower motor should be black
carb doesn't look right
wrong voltage reg
wire splices by alt
missing heat riser tube
antifreeze leaks on temp sender and front of rad
plastic tie strap on heater hoses
rusty clamp on overflow hose
unpainted bolt on hood hinge

I really hope that is an old picture and that those things were corrected before it went to auction.  That thing should be spotless for $35 let alone $50. :2cents:

All the ones I've seen are engine color (Chrysler Medium Engine Blue).  But aside from picturesI haven't found anything to document it.
