Trunk gutter - who makes the best?
« on: January 24, 2012 - 10:17:59 PM »
So I have some yucky-poo rust in the very corner of my trunk gutter. Time to get it sorted before it gets worse.

The worst is in the top section, however it's symmetrical with the side pieces, so if I buy a left & right piece the panel beater should be able to make it work.

It appears that all 3 of the big names - Dynacorn, AMD & Goodmark - make the replacement pieces.

Have heard the stories of various repro panels not being up to snuff when it comes to fitting, so I thought I'd ask before committing.

Has anybody used the repro trunk gutters from either of these 3 companies? If so, how did the fit? Any dramas? Either one stand out above the others? Place I've bought from before sells the AMD pieces, so I'd go with them. Just want to check first.

Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Russ, any guy who fancy's himself a panel beater should be ashamed to have told you to replace those gutters. Firstly, the majority of the hole is in the upper trunk panel, not the gutter proper. Secondly, it'd take about 15 minutes to make a wee patch and an hour to weld/grind/fill it as required. Let's say another 1/2 an hr to pull the w/strip and drill out the spot welds.  :2cents:

To be fair, nobody told me a needed replacement pieces to do it - that was simply me making a decision. My thinking (ie: luck) would be that once the paint was taken back, more would be discovered along the gutter. Thought it would be easier with something already formed to shape.

Looking over the rest of the car, there are a few spots in the rear that have some rot coming through - around the rear window, trunk floor needs replacing, and the quarter around the side marker has some paint separated from the panel. I just know that once I start taking paint back, I'm going to find more. Pre-fabbed pieces may ease things along.

Not an absolute necessity though. Simply me thinking aloud, via a keyboard.

I hear ya. It all depends on how deep you go with this thing. Trust me, from personal experience, these cars are worse for rot then most anything than perhaps a Fiat. No pun intended. I'll have to post a few of mine; that'll make you happier. LOL

AMD makes the best and that includes all the panels for these cars. Dynacorn and Goodmark are the same thing. Dynacorn resells Goodmark.

I bought mine from Roseville Chrysler, part #2120-714L and R. They are a quality piece that fit extremely well. Mine were not only rotten, but pieced together in multiple spots, extremely bondo, extremely brazed, with vestige from several rear tail panels welded over each other. They were a necessity for the rest of the new panels.

I agree with the AMD pieces. I used them for mine and had no issues with fit.  If the spot that you show in the picture is your only issue I would in fact Patch the spot as the gutter ends at the spot that is rusted.
