I'm going to Watkins Glen!
« on: January 25, 2012 - 10:10:00 AM »
A friend of mine (a Mustang guy) told me about an event they hold at Watkins Glen twice a year.  They let you run your vehicles on the track with an instructor.  Once they sign you off, you get to go solo.  He's been taking his Cobra R up there for a few years.  He just picked up a new Boss 302 Leguna Seca this year and was talking trash about my new Challenger.  I managed to scrape up the entrance fee so I'll be heading up there to represent the new Challenger.  Unfortunately he'll most likely run rings around me but I'm just looking forward to taking to the track and seeing what she'll do.  Time for me to start looking into track mods!

Anyone else that's interested in giving it a shot here's the website.  http://www.phoenixcmr.com/

I'm going to the June 25-26 session.  Right before Carlisle.  I'm gonna have a busy summer.

That Charger looks awesome on the track!  My neighbor has a yellow Super Bee SRT 8 that looks similar.  Man I wanted that car until the Challenger came out.

thank's ,you said you are looking for track mods. seat belt upgrade would be a big help have not done it yet just one reason for not going back yet.skip the power adders and go with brake pads and rotors for the front.DOT4 brake fluid.stainless steel brake lines. bump steer big problem. you can go a long way with a tire upgrade.just remember this, our cars are 4000lbs + pigs in the corner.and without suspention upgrades the front will push and the tires will sqeel the hair on the back of your neck will stand up,as you slide up into the corner and wait for the car to rotate in to the turn.your instructor will be a ford or chevy guy so hang in there when thay want you to try there line and it will not work for you. I love my car and it is fun to drive at the track but it is no road course car without upgrades.Just hang in and drive to the cars and your ability, have fun and remember smooth is fast at the glen.

Thanks for the tips!  My car is a 2012 so power adders are pretty much out.  It came with the Super Track Pack that has F1 Supercar tires and upgraded pads.  Are you recommending something different like crossdrilled/slotted rotors and ceramic pads?  Better tires?  Do you think strut bars would help the handling?  I had them on my old SRT-4 and they helped that chassis out, but the LX is a different animal.  It's a daily driver that my girlfriend uses so I'm leery of "racecar" mods just yet.  I'm used to heavy vehicles since the work sled is a Ford CVPI but thanks for the heads up.  I don't want to put my baby in a ditch!

I have front and rear shocktower braces from razors edge less body roll feels better to me stiffer ride.I'M trying to educate myself about what the super track pack brake package is.It looks like the same caliper as mine ,police brakes ,two piston .I went to my first school all stock and no problems. you should be good on tires, rotors and pads. You said you had an SRT-4  now that would be a grate glen car short wheel base corning ability .

From what I believe the Super track pack is basically the cop brake pads with Goodyear F-1 Supercar tires.  I don't have the SRT Brembo brakes.  It has a "sport mode" button that supposedly changes the stability program and stiffens the ride. I'm planning on the shocktower braces anyway.

The SRT-4 would have been a great track car the way I had it set up.  It handled night and day differently from stock.  It just wasn't "me" so I sold it.  I know the Challenger won't be setting any track records but I'm hoping not to embarass myself out there.
