Sloppy indicator/turn signal lever

Over the past 6 months I've noticed my indicator lever has been getting very sloppy and loose. There is a good inch of travel up & down in the off position, and when put into either indicator position, the same amount of play is present (video below)

I'm about to open it up and see what's what. Hopefully the lever housing has simply loosened and only needs tightening in its place, but I won't know for sure until I get in there.

Just thought I'd ask and see if anyone else has had a similar problem, and how they rectified it. Was it a simple case of re-tightening something, or was a part worn out and needed replacing?

Hey Russ,

Just looks like the screw is loose holding the stalk on the plastic switch assembly. remove the crush can and tighten it up, it will be sweet. :2thumbs:

There is a hole and what I thought was a screw, but it's hard to see and appears slightly off centre. Couldn't get a screw-driver to it. Had to wait until today so I can go get a puller to get the crush can off.

OK, all sorted. Was easy-peasy as mentioned, however having never removed one before, had no idea what I was in for. Worst thing about owning this car in Australia is I can't just run to my local wrecker/dismantler, or have something mailed overnight.

Can be a PIA, which is why I ask on here first - just to be sure :bigshades: Save's me having my car sit around a few weeks un-driveable waiting on parts because I did something wrong and buggered it up.

For those who may be in the same position as I was:

Inside the crush-can. Remove this nut, then insert wheel puller into the two threaded holes as shown:




The Wheel Puller set-up (cost $11.95). Simply twist, and the crush-can slowly slides of the spline. Takes about 20 seconds.






The guilty party. Loosened the screw a bit mode, dropped some thread lock behind it, then tightened it up. Now it's perfect. Nice crisp movement.



Then put it all back together again, nice and tight.

To put the crush-can back on, it won't simply slide back on - it does require effort. Don't try and bash it on though, you might bugger up the splines. Simply place it on, then attach the large nut inside. As you tighten it, it will slide the crush-can back into place.

Also ... before you take the crush-can off - it'd be wise to mark with a line with some chalk (or something non-permanent), on both the crush can and column cover behind it. That way when putting it back on, you can align it to where it was when you took it off so your steering wheel goes back to where it was. I didn't do this and had to take it off and do it again so my steering wheel was aligned. :faint:


As to what dodj commented above, you actually can't access this particular screw through the holes in the crusher can.

I am pretty sure the crush can will only go on one way as it has a master spline, double check, but i think it has. :wave:

Got bored and had to do it again to line the steering wheel up, so i made a video of it:




Sure it's master splined? I had a look when trying to line it up and I didn't notice anything.

You made the process look easy.  I’ve taken the steering wheel off before, but never the crush can.  Speaking of; did you spray any wd-40 (or something similar) around the crush can base for easier removal? 

I have a brand turn signal and switch.  I’ve put off replacing them (for about ten years now) because of the crush can.  Guess I don’t have any excuses now.  Well, it’s still cold outside  :roflsmiley:

I deleted the audio from the video because the microphone was too close to my head, and it picked up too much of my breathing hahaha. Sounded crap. I had put James Taylor - Machine Gun Kelly over the top of it (similar run time), but Youtube removed it. mugs.

I didn't use WD40 or any kind of lubricant. There's no need for it unless the parts have rusted together. The puller is all you'll need.

Yep. Definitely no master spline on mine.

Re-did it again today as it was still slightly off centre and double checked the spline on both the shaft & the crush can.
