So what i understand is the LA plant liked to stamp twice that code, maybe cause they didnt use that stamp very often lol

And so all the trims should be stainless not black at all not even around the back glass?

Thanks to all

I've never seen a Gator Grain roof with anything other than stainless window trim. I've actually never seen painted rear trim on any '70 Challenger.

What condition is the trim in? If it was factory painted, I doubt it would be polished underneath. Try taking some paint off and see what's underneath.

Got pics of the trim? Got pics of the car? Chuck them up.

Yep. My car is an LA car and has the roof code on it twice. It's just the way LA did it at the time.

Regarding the V08 on this particular car, one other V08 tag I've seen was also a FY1 Car, with Gator Grain top, and HX59 Black & Orange cloth insert seats - hence the reason for V08. Quite a unique combo.

Here's the tag (from this thread a few years back):
[

1970 there were no black & orange seats. H5X9 is the black and white houndstooth cloth & vinyl bucket seat interior.

The V1G double stamping isn't mysterious. All Dodge's LA built cars in 1970 got the roof code stamped twice.

Any particular reason why they were doing that?  Stamping it twice?

Yes it will be very nice with the gator top.... but it's not lemon twist (plymouth cuda code )....it's banana yellow (dodge challenger code). I'll post a picture when the vinyl top will be installed. I never seen it with it.... the car was orange when i bought it.

From what i have noticed, it only seems to appear on vinyl roof cars and not painted roof cars.

:iagree:

the first code (above the body paint code) was the roof color (paint code or vinyl top code), the second code (in alphabetical order at the end of the codes because of the "V") was the code for the vinyl top option, so no twice codes on painted roof cars.
But this was only on LA (E) built cars correct, Hamtramck (B) built cars never had the twice vinyl code on the fender tag.

That is totally correct my friend  LA plant cars only, they worked off of an alphabetical order on the fender tag system in LA, and if the V code was a vinyl roof car, it got displayed again on the fender tag.

Ok so 1 question is solve, now i know why i have twice the V1G. What about the V08???

Certain colours, trim options etc, came with recommendations for the rest of the car. Not every colour was recommended by the factory to match another. The idea of the V08 on the tag/sheet was to let the factory workers know that in the event of such mismatched colours being optioned, it wasn't a mistake and was OK to proceed.

If you look at the following sheet, you'll see the recommended interior/exterior colours for the V1G Gator Grain roof.

According to that, your tags options - FY1 with black interior is OK - so it shouldn't be that, but there are other possibilities.

I'm not sure if certain paint/trim options were or were not recommended with specific engine or build types (High/Special - Rallye/Convertible, etc). I'm also unsure of the context of V08's description - Paint, Trim, and Vinyl Roof Edit Waiver - is it simply about the colours? or does it go beyond and include certain items. For example, yours comes with front bench-seat which was not a highly demanded option on E-Bodies. Maybe that has something to do with it.

The other possibility is that your car was a very early build: September 22, 1969. Challengers didn't hit dealer showrooms until Sept. 23. Once they hit show-rooms and got feedback from dealers and saw what people were buying, those options/recommendations and such may have been revised. Recommendations for Gator Grain vinyl roofs may have initially been limited to fewer colours, and only later expanded to incorporate more colours - however this is strictly conjecture on my part.

Not uncommon to have factory practices & options change or evolve throughout the production cycle.

Take 1970 Challengers with the A66 option for example. Very early builds seem to of had no engine call-outs on the hood, and V8 fender badges; They then started showing up with 340 Four Barrel decals on the hood, and V8 fender badges; and then others started appearing with the metal badge engine call-outs on the hood, and R/T fender & trunk badges - even though they weren't R/T's.

There's no way of knowing exactly why you got the V08 at this point with the info that's currently on the internet. Unless you happen to find someone from the factory that actually worked on your actual car, and remembers it, I'd say what's in this thread is about as close as you'll ever get. If none of the above satisfies you and you must know more, my only recommendation would be to head over to the The 1970 Hamtramck Registry and contact Barry Washington. He has oodles of info on Mopars and if anyone has come across this information before, or something similar, it'd be him. His site references Hamtramck in its title, but it incorporates LA built cars as well.

He's no longer a member of this forum unfortunately, but he has access to massive amounts of documentation and information. He'd be your best bet at this point. If you do find out more, please share it here. Would be great to know.

All the best,
Russ
