73 chally power steering box
« on: January 29, 2012 - 02:34:37 PM »
My chally steers like a boat. It has power steering, is rebuilding the box something someone can do at home, or is it best left to a vendor? Does  anyone make a kit?

Thanks!

I have not tackled a box since high school , no cared if it even worked after I re-assembled it lOl
there is a ton of factors though , is the coupler loose
is the main shaft walking up & down in the steering box
What is the condition of tie rods ends & ball joints etc ?
What is the condition of the rubber bushings ?
How was the alignment set , all of these car were delivered with bias ply tires , the factory alignment specs do not work .
 Any bent parts ?
The handling can be altered drastically with any of the above , if the steering box is worn I recommend swapping to a Firm Feel or Steer & Gear performance box

Shocks are new, front end rebuilt a year or so ago. The box probably has never been touched so I guess its time for someone who knows what they are doing to do it. I will send it in to FF.

Thanks guys.

Get the level 3.  Don't let them talk you into the 2.

I'm sorry but what do you mean is steers like a boat?  The factory boxes were boosted a lot.  I can remember riding along with my dad and watching him steer with one fingure.  There may not be anything wrong with the steering box...people are just so used to newer cars that don't boost the steering as much.
