I had the same thing earlier this year. I needed a timing belt in the Hyundai. I had had the last one replaced in NC for $265, and that guy apologized that it was so much. In Northern VA I called a half dzen places and they were all around $800. I drove two hours to see my brother in Winchester and had it down for $300.

In Northern VA everything is incredibly overpriced; it's one of the reasons I hate it hear. In Old Town Alexandria, a burger is $12. I think I'm going to start sound like Neil with Canda until I can get myself out of this hellhole.

12 bucks for a burger??  I just took my daughter out to lunch yesterday and two plates of Mexican were not much more than that.
Reminds me of a guy I know that lives up your way that said he would be better off earning 1/2 and living here in the Sunny South. 
I know you've made reference to the high rent before, you should look into the job market here in the Silicon Valley South.

Around the Boston area it's expensive too.  When ever we go to visit a relative out of MA for what we paid for our house they have almost twice the house and land we have.
