Replacing the dipstick tube
« on: February 03, 2012 - 09:46:48 PM »
So I find myself at a very simple and very annoying problem, I got the old dipstick tube out of my 1977 440 engine, and now getting a new one in seems to be a great hassle just by barely fitting in, obviously its suppose to be a tight fit, but I know I'll break it if I try to pound it in with a hammer. I've already tapped on it with the rubber mallet, tried shrinking the metal in dry ice and warming up the engine block and its still not fitting in. What options do I have, how is it suppose to be done?

I got the basic dipstick from 440 source.

Save me from stupidity! And thanks in advance.

A couple of tricks

on a bench grinder, put a small bevel on the end, it helps to get it set into the hole.

Small crows foot on the bottom edge with extention, then tap it in

Use a phillips screw driver on the top inside the tube after beveling the end and tap it right in

:iagree:  We also used to slide a box end wrench which fits the tube closely, down until it hits the pressed stop made in the tube and like Al says, using a hammer, tap it in. A wee dab of never-seize  wouldn't hurt, either.  :2cents:

I put my tube in the clamp for my flaring tool and tightened it just enough to reduce the diameter to fit. PK

I have resorted to beating it...carefully.

I have had two dip sticks from 440 source and neither one fits.  The tips offered have not been tried by me yet.

Let me know which one works best for you.

a crowfoot on the bottom edge/bump thing, and a lot of extensions so i could tap it in from above.
