Trunk lids, what does yours look like
« on: February 05, 2012 - 05:21:08 AM »
I have a 73 ralley challenger lid as per photo. Has no holes for a wing as you would expect, and has one square hole with a light in it. Have 2 friends with 70 challengers . Both have holes for a wing but one has the same single square hole with light ,and other has 4 even spaced holes. Assume for T/A option spoiler. Was it luck of the draw in 1970 ? Are 72-74 all like mine. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks tony.

This is my original trunk lid from my 1971 'Cuda...

It was a late built car, 07/09/71.

My '73 is like yours. I might be wrong, but I don't think any kind of wing was available (factory) for 72-74?  :dunno:

I thought the trunk light was part of an optional lighting package.

Hmmm... this is interesting as I have a '72 Challenger Rallye and PADAWAN has a 1970 Challenger R/T SE and we were just looking at our trunk lids and noticing the same issue but reversed.

If I am not mistaken, his 1970 trunklid did NOT have the recess holes for a Go Wing but my '72 did.  I think my '72 trunk lid had the 4 square cuts outs, do not remember his.

I'm a bit busy now but if I get a chance in the daylight I'll take a pic of my trunk lid.  It is the original to my '72.

I believe dodj is correct in that there were no factory options for a wing or spoiler of any sort for '72-'74.  :grinyes:

Ok. I finally took some pics.  This is the original trunk lid for this car.   As you can see, it has the 4 recessed holes for the Go-Wing installation (and the holes to mount the brackets to secure the wing) and also the 4 holes for a T/A spoiler.  Also had the rectangular hole assumeably for the trunk light option.

My is a '72 Challenger Rallye, scheduled build date 8/17 1971.  Don't know if it being an early car made any difference as I may have gotten a '71 trunk lid from the factory, I dunno.  I do have a '70-'71 style Rallye gauge panel that is factory installed in my '72 so who knows...  :dunno:

This may not be 100% accurate...I'm just going off of memory.

Early 1970= possibly just luggage rack holes
Still Early 1970 = added go-wing holes
Later 1970-71= luggage rack, go-wing and T/A holes
72-74 = no spoiler holes

Being an early built 72, you could have easily gotten the 71 style lid.

I can try to look up the exact info later if no one else posts it before then.

This is my 1972 Barracuda Trunk, might not be original though.

Just writting what I have in the Jim Schild Collectors Originality Guide - Chal and Cuda 70-74.
This is in the Chal section.
There were two variations of deck lid used.
The early model was used until about December 1969, when the J81 rear spoiler and A45 front/rear spoiler package were introduced.
The mounting of the spoiler required a restyling and a modification to the design of the inner shell of the deck lid.
Since all challenger T/A's have the 3570371 ducktail rear spoiler and were not introduced until March 1970, they all have the later desing deck lid.

The 1970 J81 rear spoiler was popularly called a gull-wing and had a distinctive 45 degree downturn on each side.
The spoiler is always finished in flat black and has mounting hardware specific to the 1970 model year.

the early info sounds right to me , my early 70 had provisions for nothing more than the trunk light for example , later versions such as 71 & later with T/A provisions seem common , it seems they were slower to eliminate these provisions & probably was just cheaper to keep stamping or using up supply after spoilers were no longer used

So my deck lid if original to my sept build '71 challenger could have holes for either a '71 or '70?  My lid is full of bondo and in the scrap pile so I will have to look.

Would assume it would have all the holes for Go Wing/T/A spoiler...  :dunno:

I would imagine that later 1970 to early 72 would have the same lid with all the holes.(72's just because they were using up existing stock before switching over)

I picked up a 70 challenger that didn't have the wing trunk lid and I thought it had been changed at some point but it still had the original paint and stripe on it and the original paint was under the jack decal and latch striker. Must have been an early car then(no build sheet or fender tag)
Also what about the latch for the lid, I thought they got painted in place but this lid has the original yellow under it. I found a picture of an original paint early 70 lid that appears to have a galvanized latch plate which means it was installed after the car was painted.
