Any photo's of Red Painted brake drums?
« on: February 10, 2012 - 09:44:11 PM »
Last year I replaced my drums as part of the locked brake system fiasco.  These were painted silver and red.  From what I've been told and what I've read, these must have been the original drums.

First, I'm wondering if this is what they originally looked like.

And, then I'd appreciate some suggestions on how to recreate this look to maintain the original appearance.

Thanks,

Rick

There is a factory drawing from the 69 model year I think that shows what part of the drum got painted and on what cars got the paint.

ONLY cars with "styled" wheels got the orange paint.  That means on E-bodies, ONLY cars with Rallye wheels and Road Wheels(magnum) got the drums painted.  With other wheel options, the drums weren't visable, so there was no reason to paint them.

The drawing also shows that NO paint was allowed on the face of the drum where the wheel would come in contact with it.  That means no paint around the wheel studs.  The drums were only painted in a 2" band between the mating surface and the edge of the drum.  Obviously, the line workers did this very sloppily.  Some cars got more paint then others.

By the looks of your drum, I'd say that isn't factory orange paint since the entire face of the drum is painted.  I suppose it's possible though.

Here's a pic of an NOS front drum.  It was painted at the factory...the wheel was installed...then for some reason it was removed from the car...boxed up and sold as NOS years later. This drum got more paint then what was supposed to be allowed.  You can see that the wheel was installed right after the drum got painted.

Still, it has less paint then yours shows.  Yours looks like it was sprayed on...not brushed on.

Resto Rick sells the correct redish/orange paint.

Thanks for all that info.  I appreciate it.  I'll get some of that paint ordered from Resto Rick.
