Opinions needed on two tone interior
« on: February 13, 2012 - 01:11:57 AM »
I’d like to do something semi-custom in the interior.  My car has all black accents (grille, wheels, spoilers, etc.) so you would have thought I would have went with an all black interior…..  :screwy:  however it was originally a white interior and since my plans have changed over the years I already had a number of white pieces (headliner, sail panels, a-pillars, sunvisors, rear panels). The door panels I have are NOS green ones so I have to use SEM vinyl dye on them no matter what.  So I’m at a point where I have to make a decision in order to finish the car.  I could either:

1)   Buy a new black headliner and sail panels and use the SEM paint on the a-pillars and panels.  That’s a bunch of time since I already have the headliner installed but not too expensive.
2)   Go with a semi-custom two tone type interior

Since the dash, carpet and package tray are already black the interior is already basically two tone so I’ve been seriously considering that.  The Cuda panels have that molded insert that just lends themselves to a two tone.  Like Bob did with his awesome Twisted Fish:

My thoughts were painting the panels white with a black insert.  Kind of like the ones in this picture (although I don’t like the gloss at all… no offense to whoever’s car this is, I just have a different opinion).

Or I could go black on the outside with the insert white.  My thought was the bottom of the door panel gets all the shoe scuffs so it might make more sense to paint that black?

For seats, I’ve been thinking about doing my seats kind of like this picture or with some other sort of white insert (this is the style of seats that I have).

Anyway I’m looking for opinions.  What do you guys think of a two tone?  Or should I just start over and go all black?

I wish I was better at photoshop because I’d try to mock it up that way.

Thanks,
Travis

I like two tone.  It adds some enjoyment for the eye.
Otherwise, everything is just black.  Doesn't give much feeling with just one color!
I like the paint on the door panel, but I do have to agree with you. I do not like the gloss.
Perhaps spray a matte coat after  the color.

Yeah sorry, I should have made that clear.  Go here to see what the car currently looks like:

Cuda Hunter I'm thinking the same thing.  I think with the orange Cuda in the picture they were trying to smooth the panel out.  I'd leave the stock grain texture alone and they would not be glossy.

I like the orange insert on the panel on the first picture.  How was that done?

Bob talked about how he made the panels on this page of his build thread:

http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=28388.705

They are Gran Coupe panels so they have a chrome strip in that location that he covered with the orange vinyl.  They look fantastic!!  Just like the rest of his car.

I just got a few pictures from a fella here of his car restore.
His center panels on the doors are glossy and the rest are factory matte.
I really do like the glossy inside.  It really does set off the insert on the door panel.
Didn't think I would like it both ways like that but I sure do.

Whatever style you decide to go with, since we now have top notch repro panels in black and white (but not green), I would recomend selling off your nice green panels to someone who needs them and using new black or white panels for the project.  You'll save someone else the heartbreak of obtaining rare parts, and you'll be happier with your own results (not constantly rubbing through to green in high wear areas.

Here is Cuda Joy's door panels.
Not terribly clear, and not actually two tone in color.
I do like the smooth panel on the inside though!
