340 6 pack - possible too add a/c?
« on: February 20, 2012 - 09:55:33 PM »
OK I am not quite ready yet to make this upgrade but hopefully before summer. I am planning to use a Vintage Air system, but will the compressor fit under the 6 pack base plate? I know it is possible on a big block but how about a small block? Looks to me like I will need to use a different compressor than is supplied with the VA system or at least some tight 90* ends on the hoses as they come out the top of the compressor. I guess if it just won't clear I could swap to individual filters on the 6 pack to give a little more room but hopefully it won't come to that as I will need the A/C here in Georgia this summer.

I have not tried it or seen it done , I lived in the coldest part of the world most of my life & never used A/C .
The Sanden compressors are smaller & the 340 intake is taller than the 440 so in theory it should be possible

I too haven't seen it but heard that it's possible and all you have to do is cut a notch out of the base of the air cleaner.  Don't know if that's with a stock compressor or with a smaller VA unit...

Ok 2 positive replies, I like that. Is the compressor with the Vintage air system the smallest option I have?

I will, I just thought there was so much experience on here I would find someone who has already been there as companies are not always the most helpful or forthcoming if you need any info regarding non stock stuff.
I guess as long as the winds are moving it stays cool being so near the ocean, enjoy - I KNOW i WILL ONE DAY SOON.

I have a 340 6 pak and a sanden compressor. I did have to trim the air cleaner housing, but not much. I can post pics if you need them.

Thanks, great to know I am not going to run into a big problem, of course it just got pushed back a little longer, had to order a new front carb today. Pics of what you had to trim would be great. Also do your lines come out the back top of the compressor?

I was also considering the Vintage Air system and I guess that I never thought about if it would fit under my six pack air cleaner.  You say that you know that it will fit a big block.  Have you seen one.  I should have put two and two together in that the 426 and 440 six pack did not come with A/C frrom the factory.

I have not seen one personally but searching the threads shows at least one setup. I am real surprised so few have dealt with this but I guess us lowly small block folks are even rarer.  :sadwavey:

Who makes the compressor?

Thanks!
