Replacement Ignition Switch Wiring
« on: February 22, 2012 - 12:20:13 AM »
Hey all, I replaced both my ignition and turn signal switches and am now wondering about some slight differences in their wiring harnesses. The main difference on the turn signal harness is the color coding. Should I be concerned? The difference on the ignition wiring is that there's a small black wire in the third position (it's sort of hard to see in the picture) that isn't on the original. I believe that what should be in place on mine is an orange wire which is part of the lighting package. What is the black one for? Can I just remove it from the connector and insert my orange wire?

Both of these replacements are new and were for a 70. I'm suspecting that these are just slight differences between a 70 and 71.

The pictures are of the old and new connectors.

Thanks.

there is no reason to believe the turn signal will not work correctly , I have seen some makes with different color wiring .
The small red wires are the key in ign buzzer

Thanks, I figured that would be the case on the turn signal. I think I'll just take the black wire (small one) out of the ignition connector and connect my orange lighting one. That's the one that supposed to go there anyway at least from the wiring diagram.

I have an auto on the column. I still have an orange wire that should go in the 3rd position instead of the black wire that I believe lights up I think the shift selector. I'm going to pull out the black wire and replace it with the orange one. Once the car is powered up I'll know for sure.

 ok,hope it works out. i sure would like to know what the black wire is doing there, ive watched a lot of pics on ebay etc,and all nos/replacement ign switches seem to have a black wire in nr 3 cavity on the connector, with the other end of the black wire ending up on the ign switch body. i have a -70 column shift steering column in pieces layin around, when i have time i will check where the orange light wire is connected and if there is a black wire, where it goes.  :dunno:
