overhead console install in a non-OC car?
« on: January 30, 2005 - 10:32:49 AM »
Has anyone did this? I have always thought the overhead consoles in the 70-71 models looked slick. What mods need to be done to the roof to be able to attach a factory overhead console to the roof of a 72-74 car?

Think you'll need to find a fiberboard headliner that the overhead console attaches to.  Good luck finding one.

hmmmm....ok, I guess I had envisioned a metal attach support that ran across the top of the car that provided attach points. Looks like it would be more trouble than its worth especially if you had to use the more rare fiberboard headliner.

You need to talk to the people that have an S/E, or an R/T S/E. Maybe Rev or Twofornow can help you.

I did it on my A body and just attached the rear of the console to a headliner bow and the front is attached under the rearview mirror. I know its not the same as an E body but shows it can be done

Note the wire hanging down is hidden now lol

your project looks great, hard to tell it was a floor console previous. I think I would want it to hard-attach so it would feel solid and wouldnt make the headliner sag. I'm still thinking about this, I guess the door ajar indicators were tied into the door light switches?

Our SE's overhead console attaches to the fiberboard and then that attaches to the car at the center of the bar going across the top and at the front right above the rear light assembly. Is that as clear as mud??

I think Rev is indicating the light assembly contained in the overhead console...

Yep.  The light assembly is at the rear of the overhead console. It sites directly under that bar running across the center of the car.

RagtopChally - Were you looking for a pegboard headliner? If so, check out Moparts today. There is a guy that has 1ea pegboard headliner for Challenger and Cuda

Rev or Red - I was just visiting your site again (for the guzillionth time!) and was looking for more details on the overhead console attachment. I have a couple of questions. Was there a metal edge retainer in your o/h console that the domelight slipped into? It would have reduced wear and tear on the edges of the hole. I think I see one in your pics. My console doesn't have one.  :walkaway:

Second, I have found a bracket for an SE car that is in the area of the console but I cant figure out what it would attach to. If it is for the cardboard headliner I wont need it. Can you identify this bracket? See the pic below:
