I did this on mine simply due to the cost of cable systems. I took a broken hood release lever and attached a tab that plunged a momentary switch. I didn't use a relay, but did blow a couple of fuses until I settled on the right fuse (3A, I think). Keep in mind that the electric load when idling is different than engine off due to the voltage drop.

Oh, and the hood can still be opened by putting an offset or shorty screwdriver into the old key tab.
