installing tach for standard dash

How hard would it be to install a tach into a standard dash?  I saw a tach for $200 that goes into the factory opening.  Can it be installed without tearing apart the dash?   I'm just thinking out loud.

I got one from redline gauge works about a month ago but I have not had a chance to install it yet!

The instrument cluster has to come out.  I installed mine when I pulled the whole dash out to replace my dash pad.

My dash is a work in progress so I don't have it hooked up yet.  It looks good.  I think if someone didn't know what they where looking at would think that it belongs there.  The way the dash is, the tach will only fit in one spot.  Mine had a blanking plate there but it is where an optional clock would go.

I put one in. Looks good compared to the blank but I find it really off to the side for a tach. I wanted a clean factory look and didn't want to do the rally dash option for about 1k. You can put it in from behind if you want to try. 2 phillips screws on the back and the blank comes out. Screw the new on in and hook up. Instrument panel is really easy to pull though, dropping the steering wheel is the biggest part of the job.

I guess when I said earlier that my dash was a work in progress, I didn't realize that I needed to spell out that what I meant was that not everything was in tip top working order...

But thanks for pointing that out for everyone.  LOL  I still have some gremlins to chase out.

How does the needle shape and font coincide with the factory gauges? Is it a close match

I think the font and needle look good.  This tachometer was made specifically for an E-body non-rallye dash.
 The problems I have with it is coughing up the 200 bucks to buy it.
And the placement on the dash.   It is the only place it will go without heavily modifying your dash frame.   I think the tach should be next to your speedometer.   Oh well.

I installed mine next to the speedo but lost the wiring diagram to hook it up. The dash has been out of the car for about 6 years. Any idea where to find the wiring diagram to hook it up  :bigsmile:

1) Do you have a Barracuda or Cuda? There is a reason based on your switch panel.
2) What's the switch you installed in the rear defog position?

Hi Bryan,
I've got a 70 Barracuda. I cut the gauge panel to insert the tach. Then I moved the other guages over, leaving the alt gauge where it was. I mounted the temp gauge in the plastic insert that was in the blank pod.

Funny you mentioned the extra switch that was added. That after market switch was in the car when I got it, but not hooked up to anything.  :bigsmile: I left it there since its better than seeing a hole. I might be able to use someday.

Yes, if you have directions on how to hook up the tach it would be great.

Hook the red wire to power, black to ground, and the green wire to the Negative post of your ignition coil.  That's it.
