Oil stinks of fuel :-(
« on: March 07, 2012 - 12:52:35 PM »
I have a clearance issue with my aftermarket oil pan on my 440-6 so I ordered a pan from Mancini in the hopes of fixing the problem.
Anyways, I flushed the oil and....it stank of fuel! Read up on it here and aparently my problem is called or can end up in cylinder wash.
Treads say to fix the fuel leaking in the cylinder too much but doesn't say how?
Now I'm worried that my piston rings might be bad...
Any advice?

Could it just be the fuel pump diaphragm leakimg?

unless you have a newer car that runs the engine lean as hell, the oil will have a certain "Fuel" smell to it.
Only time I tell folks to worry is if the oil seems "Watery" when cold. THEN, you have a fuel pump leaking issue or a carb over fueling.

otherwise, this is typical when running a carb, especially if you start it cold and shut it off before it reaches operating temp too often....

How do I determine if it's the fuel pump for sure, short of taking it off?
And if that's the only way, is it just a gasket to change or the entire pump???
I'm a rookie here. :clueless:

Trust me, I was once in your shoes. I changed the stinky oil, and I said "hey this smells like my clothes after I drive the car". Is your oil thin?

There are 2 bolts that hold the fuel pump to the block. Easy to remove, somewhat less easy to re-install. The alternator gets in the way of seeing what you're doing. There is a gasket between the pump and block, but that isn't your problem. The gasket only keeps what's inside from leaking out.

Stock fuel pumps aren't that expensive, but I recommend you go with something better if you have the budget.

The only downer is you have to buy fittings for the fuel lines. Home Depot or Lowes should be your ticket.

Lets start with how does the engine run & the plugs look , if the plugs are tan & the engine runs well it is most likely the fuel pump but if the choke stays on & the plugsa re black you could have a carb setting issue

I'll check the plugs as soon as I get the chance.
Any suggestions on a mechanical pump that is cheaper then the one suggested in this tread?
I see carter one on ebay but diferrent PSI.
My 440 is pretty stock for now.
Anyone got a part number for a decent hv mec pump?
Thanks

Yeah, I looked yesterday and it appears they only make the race pump now.   :dunno:

So, if you want to go cheap, just buy a stock fuel pump...

Oil is very watery :( and plugs looked not to bad.So I'm thinking it's the pump and for the price of a new pump, I don't want to risk it, so I'll buy a new one. The one I have now is a carter but I can't figure out which model, none of the numbers on it matches anything on the net. :clueless:
I looked at the Mancini ones and there are several...# 4845 , #4589 and #6935. I'm on a tight budget now so I want to stick with one of these cheaper ones.
But which one to take??? I was going for the 4589 cause it's 70-71 as per Mancini but Jegs says that the 4589 is 4-5.5psi but Mancini rates it at 5.5-6.6 ??? I'm looking for 6psi as per Chryco.
Any suggestions on a mechanical fuel pump below 60$.
Thanks.

Yep, go for Rockauto.com deal #4845 for $38 bucks.  There should be a coupon code somewhere for another 5% off.

Just ordered the 4845 pump just in case.
Because I openned up the pump I had and the diaphragm was nice, looked new even.
I'm wondering if it's not my carbs.
Someone told me maybe a pin doesn't close / sit well to stop the flow of fuel.
Could my carbs be done for?
Now I'm really worried about cylinder wash. I haven't driven the car very much but still, my oil was so watery it freks me out :-(
And I don't want to dish out the $ for brand new carbs, this is a 6 pack so, mucho dinero!
Thanks all for the info. The saga continues for me and I will post whatever findings I finally find.
