1972 Challenger Power Steering Pump Question

All,

My '72 Challenger power steering pump unit is starting to leak and unfortunately, it is not a simple hose leak.  After checking my shop manual, I see there are 2 types: an oval one and a round one.  I have the round one labeled the "1.06 Pump" in the shop manual.  I believe the Federal pump is the correct replacement part (vs. the Saginaw), but I'm not 100% certain.

Can someone confirm for me that the Federal power steering pump is the correct replacement part for the 1.06 round pump?

Save your money and go buy a rebuild kit.  I bought mine at Advance Auto for $14.  The hardest part of the rebuild is removing the reservoir...you have to do that anyway if you want to replace the pump.  The rebuild is VERY easy...anyone can do it in an afternoon.

The Saganaw reservoir is round and has an oval fill spout sticking out the top.  The Federal reservoir is more boxy.

Thanks- a rebuild is likely beyond my mediocre skills.  I have a round (not oval) cylinder spout, so it sounds like I have the Federal pump.

The rebuild only involves replacing some O-rings and a front seal.  It's very easy.  The only thing that would be more difficult is if you need to replace the shaft bushing.  That needs to be pressed on.  My original bushing was in perfect shape although I replaced it anyway.  I was worried at first but it was simple once I got into it.

I can post a pic of my Saginaw pump just so you know for sure what style you have.

Ok, that's not the Saganaw...that's not what I thought the Federal pump looked like either though.

Thanks for confirming.  I believe it is original equipment, as it looks fairly old and exactly like the 1.06 pump in the manual.

Can anyone confirm what I have?

Round neck is typically Federal & that is what it looks like to me , I did not think they still used that pump in 72 but I could be wrong

You could be right.  I'm matching it up against the image in my '72 shop manual, but then again, my 440 certainly is not original equipment, so the power steering pump could likewise be from another year.

Bingo!!

   No 440's in a 72 E-Body, so this engine was from an early year(most likely), thus the Federal pump.

No 440's available in 1972 E-bodies is a factory oversight that I have subsequently corrected :naughty:

even the mount for the pump is unique could be a truck mount ??
