Cuda power steering issue HELP
« on: March 10, 2012 - 09:48:33 PM »
I took the Cuda for a drive today after the engine rebuild.  I installed a new NAPA power steering box while the engine was out to get rid of a leak problem and now the power steering works when I turn left but nothing when I turn right!  Any ideas, hopefully not including pulling the box out!  Thanks

We ran into the same problem years ago when we first got the car running and found that the steering wheel was turning by itself.  After reading the fine print, we found out that the placement of the valve body on top of the steering box has a minute amount of adjustment, and if it's too far forward or too far back, the power assist isn't equal. BTW, the valve body is the thing on top of the steering box with the two tubes going into into it.   If it's pulling more to the left, loosen (don't remove) the two screws holding the valve body down and tap it slightly rearward (I'm thinking it's rearward).  A 1/16th of an inch may be too much--it doesn't take much to change the pull.  Tighten it up and try the steering.  Keep adjusting until it feels even to both sides.  Good luck.

I had that problem with my old box and was able to get it corrected with help from this site but this is different.  The wheel stays centered up but I have assist when  I turn left but when I turn right there is no assist.  Any ideas?

Sounds like you need to pull it out and bring it back to NAPA.

Any noise when running? Is the fluid aerated?  Maybe try jacking the front end up with it running and turn the wheels lock to lock? I was thinking maybe it needs to be bled? :dunno:  worth a try and it's free?

Brad may be right, they do need to be bled and you should be able to do by turning the wheels left and right while being sure the fluid level is correct.  If you get rid of air recheck the fluid level.

I checked the troubleshooting section of the service manual and other than internal issues the only thing listed is air in the system so do as Skunkworks suggested & crank the wheel back and forth, lock to lock.

So what does it mean if it pulls to the left whether the valve is tapped all the way forward or backward?  Plugged? Fluid not cycling back through the pump?

If you keep the engine running it will actually pull all the way to one side, then make wierd clunks as if the worm gear is jumping, then it will pull the opposite way......... and repeat........

When I tried adjusting the valve, I had the wheel locked, because I can just start with a switch, with key off, and it almost twisted my steering colum right off.

sounds like dirt in the directional valve preventing the pressure from bypassing

I jacked mine up and turned it lock to lock lots of times, let it down and tried it and it still has power steering left only but nothing when turning it to the right?   :clueless:

sounds like the clocking position  in the box was set  wrong  when they put a seal kit in it  ,  i would remove it and get another .when a company rebuilds boxes these days its most likely a re seal unless its a new box .   before that make sure the air is completely removed from the system.imop

Hummm I'm at the end of my knowledge with steering boxes. I'd say it's an internal issue. Looks like a warantee  issue from here? :eek4:
