New Engine Wiring Harness - QUESTIONS - PLEASE HELP!!!
« on: March 11, 2012 - 02:00:53 PM »
Hey guys,
Looking for some electrical help and I will warn you ....my knowledge of electrical issues is VERY LIMITED.  SO PLEASE be patient with me!!!
Car is a 71 Dodge Challenger 440.  Has a aftermarket electronic distributor (no points).

Ok, so I am installing a new wiring harness.  As I was lining every thing up, I noticed that it appeared I was missing part of the harness (MAYBE..see  picture 1).  I dont know if it is a separate harness or if it is suppose to be part of the engine harness (see picture 1).  Basically I need to know the following:

1.  The blue/yellow wire is spliced into the ignition wire on the fire wall (see picture 1 tip of my middle finger and picture 2).  Is this the correct thing to do?  Do I have to do the same or is there a better way to do this?

The two brown and white wires go to the distributor (see picture 1).
The solid brown wire goes to the negative side of the coil.
There is a blue wire that as been cut and taped off (see picture 1...look close blue wire is hard to see).  Any ideas?

2.  See the picture of the NEW wiring harness (picture 3).
There is a Blue wire with a round connector.  Does anyone know what this is for?
Finally, the last wire on the harness..Does anyone know what this is for?

Please let me know if this is clear or not.  Kinda hard to discribe everything....

Thanks for being patient and your help!

The brown wire at the end of the harness(by the horn wires) is for an electric windshield washer motor...if you have electric washers.

I'll assume the harness you bought was for a points style ignition? The harness in picture 1 is added when you convert to electronic ignition.

MEK-Dangerfield,

I think you got it....I bought the points style harness and not the one for eletronic ignition.

Ok...so I will send it back and swap it out for the correct one.

Guys...thanks for the help!

If you are going to run the orange MP ECU, I highly recommend mounting it on the factory stand-off bracket.  There have been a lot of orange box failures lately and I have a feeling they aren't getting enough air behind them.  Mounting it right to the firewall like that doesn't allow for any airflow.  The factory thought these ECU's needed extra airflow so they mounted them on a bracket.  :2cents:

the bracket was used 73-74 , it also keeps the box away from the firewall to keep water out

Hey guys,

I just received the correct engine harness for my 71 Dodge Challenger with a 440.  I have lined everything up and it matches up perfectly except for the two in the picture.  I currently have a black and red wire attached to the ignition ballast.  The new harness has 2 totally different plugs (see pic) one with 2 dark blue wires and one with a brown, dark blue, and a red/green strip wires.

1.  First, what order do they attach to the ballast?  (dark blue wire on the left or right side?)
2.  Second, should I pull the plugs off, twist the wires together, and attach them to a female type plug that fits the ballast?

I apologize if this should be obvious but I freakin hate electrical crap as I just dont know much about it.  So your help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks..

Those are the wires for the factory 4 prong ballast.(they will only attach one way...that's why there is a plastic pin sticking out of the connector)  You only need the 4 prong ballast if your ECU has 5 pins.  The MP orange boxes have 4 pins.  You can run a 2 prong ballast.  Someone else will have to tell you how to wire it....I have no idea why you have two sets of ballast wires.

the end with 2 blue wires is 12v feed , the only wires you need at the other end is the twinned blue/brown , the green is not used , you can slide the wires out of the connectors & use the single wire ends on the new harness

Chryco,

Just want to make sure I have it correct.....
1.  2 blue wires are 12v feed....I can connect them togther with one connector and plug onto ballast.  Correct?
2.  twinned blue/brown, connect to other side of ballast.  Correct?
3.  Green is NOT USED.  Correct?

Sorry, I just want to make sure!  Dont want to fry anything....

Thanks...

Chryco,

Wait!!!! The two blue wires inside the plastic housing....currently they are separate...that is they each have their own plug.

So, do I remove the wire connectors and join them together?

Sorry ....just trying to make sure I get this right.
