« on: March 15, 2012 - 07:51:15 AM »
Don't know if you guys saw this, just saw this today.  Looks massive!  I guess this guy's collection spanned 52 warehouses and buildings.  All sorts of cars!

It looks like the wife and I will be going on a holiday in Washington state. Maybe the same trip as the one to see the Clive Cussler museum in Colorado

I live in the Tacoma area LeMay has thousands of cars. He made all of his money hauling trash. He owned a restoration shop and hired a crew just to restore all of the cars he bought. Yes the museum is huge Its not open yet but will be in June.

Here is the website for "Americas Car Museum"--The Le May Collection.  Part of the collection that is.  Before Harold Le May died he had approximately 3600 cars.  He could be seen at all the local swap-meets where he bought many cars and parts.  He usually had three or four people with him for spotters.  Many of his cars have been auctioned off in recent years but as I understand it the good stuff still remains.  After his death the family donated a few hundred cars to the New Museum of which they no longer are directly associated with.  The Family still maintains a museum at the original site (Marymont) near the family home in Parkland, WA and the bulk of the collection is located there. Note: I've modified my original note to include the Marymont site as well.

The Puget Sound Region of Western Washington (Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Shelton, Bremerton, etc) is blessed with auto related activities.  In addition to the opening of the LeMay Museum (see previous post) and not far away is the brand new "The Ridge Motorsport Raceway" located outside of Shelton, Wa--- see website.  This track is also opening in June of 2012.  It will feature a drag strip, road course, motocross etc.

I liked the line in the report that went something like "money was a non-factor and he couldn't stop buying cars".  If money was no object (sadly it is!) can see I would have a lot of cars, but more along the Leno route not 3,600 - wow!

Since you mentioned it, about how many cars does Leno have?  I've always wondered that.  :clueless:

Sounds very cool Super Blue! I don't know how many cars Leno has, but he has one of everything. He has a crew of mechanics just to keep everything in tip top shape and drive them to make sure they are all mechanically sound. What a dream job! he also drives them himself. Now what's this about a Clive Cussler museum? Is he a car collector? or is it just books? lol.

The thing I like about Leno is that a lot of his videos of his cars end with  :burnout:

WOW! YES it is the Clive Cussler of book fame! Glad he is an old car lover!  Thanks for the link Super Blue! he has very cool books - kinda like James Bond style stuff. A lot of it has to do with sea going vessels and his own personal research into finding old sea vessels. Very good reading - highly recommended. Who knew? lol. cool stuff.
