Time to decide on tires any thoughts?
« on: March 16, 2012 - 04:14:38 PM »
So here it is I have my wheels, Black steelies with dog dish caps 15's 8's for the back and 7's for the front I know I want to run a 275 60 out back but cant decide what tire.  First thought was bfg radial ta's but every ones got them. 2nd thought bfg g force drag radials ( do they last with lots of street driving).  3rd the nito 555's.  I am very back and fourth on raised white letters and black walls.  Any thoughts ideas etc... would hope fully help with a decision.

Nothing looks better on a muscle car then reproduction Polyglass tires.  They are making a lot of different sizes now.  I don't know what size = a 275-60 but I'm sure there is something close.   :2cents:

Looks are one thing, but if you want your musclecar to actually perform I'd stay away from the reproduction tires. The tread designs are outdated, and the compounds available are straight out of the '70s.

I'd go with a modern design, modern compound tire if you're actually planning on doing something other than driving your car to the show and back to the garage. The Nitto is a decent tire, and will give much better results as far as handling goes than any reproduction, or even the BFG T/A's. The biggest problem is finding decent tires for a 15" rim, a lot of the better performance tires are only offered for larger rims now...

I'd stay away from BFG tires I posted a thread on them.  Problem with ply separation.
Need more members post input on the tire they run.
Past thread on BFGarbage.

Yeah I have heard some real bad things about BFG's, but it seems to be what the majority of people run  :dunno:

I really like these Mickey Thompson - look good feel good and even done some burnouts at the track with them and still seem to last ok.

It depends on your driving habits (as they say). When I slow down polyglas replicas. :smokin: For now Firestone Indy 500's work well with 60 series profile and are pretty tacky to boot. :2cents:

As for BFG's mine lasted 19 years, they got kinda hard but still smoked well till the end.  :burnout:

If you want selection, you will need to move up to a 17" wheels.  Nitto 555's don't come in 15" except for the drag radial and 275 is the smallest. If you stick with the 15" wheels, I'd go with LAA66's suggestion of the Firehawks. Ran a set for 6 years without issue. Decent tire in wet or dry. I don't think there are any excellent performance street tires in 15"

I run the Firestone Indy 500's in the 275 60 15 on the rear of my Challenger. Good all around tire on the street, as far as traction goes.... well,  when I flash the converter behind my 440 they do great burnouts!  :burnout: I have no complaints on the tire and would recommend them.

I'll throw in another vote for the Firestone Indy 500's Thats what I'm using. If your sticking with 15" I'd say best all around tire for the money. BFG's IMO are ok the first season then they turn hard as hockey pucks and have no grip/traction. Lately they seems to be having lots of seperation issues as well. ( as noted above)
I'm running 235/60/15 on the front 255/60/15 rear. I'm planning on 295/50/15  later this summer when I get the new b-body dana 60

Coopers, Firestones or Dean Stingers in front , Nitto in the rear makes sense to me

mixing Bias & radials = Not good
mixing brands of radials doesn't seem to be an issue until the tread separates LOL
