Winter gas blends? Not so good...?
« on: March 22, 2012 - 08:51:14 AM »
For those of us that live up north and store our cars in the winter. With the early spring this year I used up the tank of fuel the car went into storage with so I put $40 of premium (93 Octane) in at a station I never use for political reasons as I was running on fumes. ( PetroCanada)  So after about 10 minutes of getting gas the car starts bucking and hesitating, like the fuel is boiling on a real hot summer day.( I have this issue on REALLY hot days sitting in traffic) This is at a slower speed, if I rev it up it clears up.
I'm thinking either I got a bad tank of fuel or it's a winter gas blend that's full of ethenol? It wasn't "that" hot here yesterday about 80 F max. It was running fine on the tank from last fall?
Anyone else run into this problem?

5 things come to mind
- Never use Petro can or Husky , high alcohol content to make premium also a problem is winter with different mixes
- they do not sell much premium so it could be old
- never fill up at a station that does not have a separate hose for premium or the first gallon or so will be regular fuel
- Move here , regular is 91 octane here , premium is 95
-  Never support Petro can

Oh I agree with you on the Petrocanada thing! I hate them with a passion. That would have been the first time I have used there fuel in at leats 15-20 years. I was desperate though....car was chugging and stalled. Out of gas I coasted to the pump! :-[   The darn fuel gauge work most times...and sometimes not. I have a new sender to put in that I got from Dave at Roseville about 2 years ago. When the gauge needle just touches the empty line... you are EMPTY ,no 5 more miles etc...  Ya I too figured it had been sitting in the tank all winter as with the price of it not many use it? :dunno:
It's fine till the engine gets up to temperature , I'll have to do a few of these :burnout: to use it up! :grinyes:
I usually use Shell premium fuel and never had a problem.
Move there? I couldn't import my car there! :pullinghair:  NO WAY!  And since you left the winters have been warm? :poopoke: :roflsmiley:

Thanks Buddy!  :P

Once I ran out of fuel in front of a Petrocan , I called a buddy & asked him to bring a couple of gallons of fuel as I had run out & he said but you are right in front of a gas stn & I said yeah but no way I will buy from Petrocan ,  he laughed & brought me fuel !!
I bet you would make more $$ here & you could drive the car year round !!
I doubt I can do Carlisle this year again , the business we bought tapped the bank account , I should be in front of the 8 ball again next year though

Ya that would be the first thing one would think of but it only acts up after it reaches operating temp ( 195) so that makes me wonder about quality? Like old gas of too much ethanol?

It could be related to the vapor pressure of your gas. I have this problem every winter in S.F. bay area when our gas is switched over to a higher vapor pressure for cold weather. On warm days it starts to vapor lock.

News to me. Up here it is labelled ethanol so you can avoid it.......or so I thought?

Brad, are you saying there is corn in all the gas?  :clueless:

Yep, next time your at the pump look for the little disclaimer that says " may contain up to 10% ethenol" It's a decal usually at the top near the readout.
It's my understanding ( and I could be wrong?) I was told Shell premium doesn't have ethenol?
I'm noticing it in my small engine business. It eats up aluminum carbs and seals, gaskets etc...It also goes "bad" quicker. I've had quite a few calls already this spring for no starts, ran fine last fall, this spring won't start. First thing I do is drain the gas tank and carb , put in fresh premium and so far they have all started right up afterwards. I tell all my customers to try and use Shell premium fuel?

Ok I burned up most of the crappy PetroCanada crap and just filled up with Shell Premium. The gas station attendent assured me the premium fuel has NO ethenol! :2thumbs: He says thats the #1 question vintage car owners ask. Seems I'm not the only one who has noticed.  :sly: He also said the other grades "MAY" have up to 5% ethenol Runs MUCH better now! No sputtering and carrying on  when it gets up to 195degrees engine temperature! :2thumbs: Lesson learned....
