Questions for Fast EZ-EFI users
« on: March 23, 2012 - 11:31:23 AM »
I just bought this system and have a couple questions for some of the people using it.

Is anyone using the MP electronic ignition distributor? If so, are you having any issues with noise?

What type of return line are you using? I was planning on using the line with the kit for my fuel line and my current 3/8 stainless line as a return line. I plan on attaching the return line to one of the capped lines on the sending unit. Anyone see any issues with this method?

I read that the gas tank needs to be vented, is the vent on the fill tube sufficient?

Anyone have pictures of where they mounted the computer? Im leaning towards the bottom of the battery or through the firewall, under the dash...but just was wondering.

Any help in this matter is appreciated!!! I hope to have it installed by the end of the month :burnout:

I dont have the system yet but i will and have been doing a lot of reading on it.  What kind of nois are you getting from the distributer? For the fuel return line you dont want to run any rubber hose the lenght of the car. People suggest that if you already have the 5/16 hard line to use that for the return and add a 3/8 hardline next to it for the feed. I dont know how long the wireing harness is for the computer but my plan is to mount it under the dash.

Well I read through the instructions and it looks pretty straight forward. I think the hardest part will be hiding all the wires. I don't like how they broke out each of the injectors and all the sensors on the harness. It will take a little time to dress it nicely, but nothing major. Overall, Im impressed so far with what I am looking at. I bought the 30227 kit w/ the fuel pump and rubber line....I probably won't use much of the line and use my old 5/16 line as the return and the 3/8 as my feed. I haven't mocked anything up yet, but the only hiccup I can see is where I am going to mount the fuel pump - it has to be lower than the pick-up so that limits it a little. However, I think I should be able to find a location once its on the lift. I plan on putting the ECU under the dash if I can find a hole to go through - if not, I will probably hide it under the battery tray or somewhere not noticeable. Hopefully I can still get this done by the end of the month!

Is anyone using the MP electronic ignition distributor? Yes  If so, are you having any issues with noise? No, none at all.

What type of return line are you using? I was planning on using the line with the kit for my fuel line and my current 3/8 stainless line as a return line. I plan on attaching the return line to one of the capped lines on the sending unit. Anyone see any issues with this method?  I'm using the lines supplied by FAST

I read that the gas tank needs to be vented, is the vent on the fill tube sufficient?  That's how mine is.

Anyone have pictures of where they mounted the computer? Im leaning towards the bottom of the battery or through the firewall, under the dash...but just was wondering.  Below and behind the glove box so the LEDs are visible to me.

I have the system.  I used 3/8 line through out.  I have a vented cap and that works just fine.  Mounted the computer on the tranny hump under the dash in front of the console.  I actually put the handheld display screen in the ashtray....sounds odd but it fits perfect and I can access whenever I need to.  My advice is to mount the fuel pump as close to the tank as possible...I used a exhaust hanger over the rear axle, and the pump sits just below the tank.  Also, if there is a weakness in your fuel system, that kit will find it.  So make sure your tank is newer and has no rust in it, otherwise it will clog those filters up quick as can be and cause you a summer of wondering what's gone wrong..

Well I figured I would update the thread for anyone looking for info in the future....

I ended up installing the computer under the battery tray using 1/4-20 threadserts so that the battery mounted flush. The threadserts worked perfectly because the standoff amount let the computer sit off the battery tray ripple on the bottom side. The harness to the computer has great access and is only noticed if pointed it. By luck the harness is the perfect length to the throttle body. I ended up only shortening 1 cable - the tach adapter cable. The fuel pump harness was also the perfect length. I know it was all luck, but its almost like F.A.S.T. designed the lengths perfectly for my application :D Anyhow, I mounted the fuel pump to the passenger side frame rail near the wheel housing. It has great access and runs along side the original line. I also used the hose that came with the kit for my feed line and my original line as my return line. The handheld I still am working on, I cant seem to find the right location yet. I am thinking about making a collapsible bracket and installing it in my single speaker dash hole (dont have a radio) But all in all, it was a pretty painless install. The biggest problem I really had was modifying the sending unit for the 3/8 return line feed - I forgot to weld the modified unit up 100% before installing it and discovered a HUGE gas leak after I filled my tank :eek4:

As for a review - simply put, I love this thing. My idle is incredibly smoother, its a night and day difference. I use to idle at 950rpm and be choppy and the shifter would rattle around. Now, I have it idling at 850 and its sooooo smooth. I no longer have the off idle bog I would randomly get with my Demon carb. The car has always started quickly, but now it idles great until its warmed up....it also stops smoother now. As for power gain (or rather power recovered), I havent really laid into it yet since its in adaptive learning but I have done a couple of small pulls and it feels stronger. The only complaint I have is that the fuel pump is pretty loud, however that isnt even close to a reason to not buy this kit. All in all, I highly recommend this kit and would buy it again :2thumbs:

Glad it worked out well :)

give us some updates about fuel mileage, drivability, etc after you get a few miles on it and it is well dialed in.

Will do. Work/life is eating up all my free time and the weather has been cooperating lately, so I havent had much time behind the wheel. I can say that it feels more powerful and is a complete night & day difference when it comes to the idle. I have had one little hang up - my return line is leaking because I modified it for the 3/8 return, but it only happens when I fill the tank. Anyhow, I hope to get a little drive time in the next week or two and figure out my fuel economy. I will update this thread and will probably resurrect my old restoration thread for the other small 'upgrade' I have been working on

Just a real quick update with a little feedback on this system. Its been a few weeks and I've managed to put a few hundred miles on the kit, should have another couple hundred more after this weekend :) I absolutely love this kit. From the first time it ran, it was better than my carb ever was. After the first 10 miles, I think the tune was pretty much 99% there. The car is a blast to drive now - I no longer have to worry about the idling at the light, no longer have to worry about hard starts, no more bogs in the powerband, and it feels stronger. I also think it gets better gas mileage, but havent confirmed - should have a better idea after this weekend. The only downside is the loud external fuel pump and the leak I cant seem to plug on the sending unit >:( ......however, I am working that all out 8) Have a brand new tank and an in-tank fuel pump kit that are waiting to be welded together. I figure that will take care of the loud pump and leaking problem, while adding reliability and minimizing cavitation/aeration.

What cam are you running? I've heard the FAST will tame a choppy cam idle. I looking to go around a 600 lift roller.
The more I hear about this system the itchier I get to buy one....... gonna have to scratch that itch.

Glad it's working well for you!!!!!

Sorry for the late update. I ended up doing an in-tank fuel pump. BIG THANKS to thedodgeboys for the idea! This was definitely worth extra $$$$ as it is super quiet now. I only hear the pump when it primes the system before it starts.

As for the EFI, I absolutely love it. I have logged over 700 miles now and havent had a single issue (outside the loud pump, but that is preference). If I had to do it over again, I would. My MPG went up ~15% but that isnt even a selling point to me....the difference in idle and drivability is what sold me. One of the best mods I have done to my car yet!

Please tell us what pump that is and where we can get it.  Also did the kit to modify the tank come with it? if not please tell us about the modification to the tank.

looks great!
