If the mixture screws are having no effect than you are past that point and your throttle blades are too far open.

I don't understand why there are holes in the butterflies.
That does the same thing as turning up the idle speed screw doesn't it.
I mean besides taking the carb out of the idle circuit, is it really a help? or
os it masking other problems. It doesn't seem right that this would be necessary on a stock to slightly mild build.   :dunno:

It allows more air through the carb to keep running without having to open the throttle plates, thus I am able to keep perfect squares in my transition slots

Swap the carb out with a friends, (similar size) if it runs right there's the problem. If not maybe other issues with the engine. I had a broken valve spring cause a stumble on a 340. Could have tuned all day with no avail. Not saying that's the problem but a carb swap is quick and easy. Good luck. :)

that just sounds way more hassle than its worth, plus everyone i know has big blocks.

i can get 99% of the stuble to go away if i make my idle mixture waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy rich, im talking like a chugging 10:1 or less air fuel mixture but then its stupid rich cruising at part throttle at a constant speed.... grrr! i reek of gas now and my nose burns!
