Ethanol
« on: March 25, 2012 - 12:05:39 PM »
I have noticed more and more stations are including Ethanol in the gasoline in various percentages.

What effect does that have on mileage and performance?
I assume that because there is not as much energy in Ethanol, these things would suffer.

Carb needs to be able to handle it.

I don't want to run on pure Ethanol.
I'm just wondering what effect 10% Ethanol from Shell will have on the performance of my modern engine?

It sucks! They put more of it in the gas around here in the winter time. Some suppliers use more of it to make  higher octane fuels ( premium) My car doesn't like it at all. It boils in the carb quicker( at lower temperatures) and mileage sucks too.  I'm NOT a fan of it....in case you didn't pick up on that?

Using Ethanol to raise octane levels is what confuses me.
Shell puts no Ethanol in its premium high-octane gas.
Wouldn't it make more sense to do it the other way around?

Modern engine computers will make the most out of whatever they are fed, but there is only so much energy in a gallon of gas, and if it is cut with Ethanol the performance will suffer no matter what.  Non-E premium must get significantly better performance.

My poor old '70s engine will hurt.

I've "heard" there is no ethenol in Shell premium. I can't find any proof of this though? Can you? The government makes them use at least 5% ethenol in there " pool" whatever that means? Maybe they use 10% in regular fuel and none in premium? :dunno:
Here is my experiance with "premium" Petrocanada fuel just last week..... :villagers:

I just filled up at Shell and asked the gas satation attendant if premium fuel has ethenol? He said no, the other grades "MAY"  have up to 5% ethenol. He said that seems to be the #1 question vintage car owners ask....seems I'm not the only one to have trouble.

Ethanol= Alcohol....Alcohol= twice as much burned to equal the same power from 1 part gasoline. Ask anyone who's running alcohol in their race car about MPG....(LOL)...

Bottom line? VERY few stations now carry NON-Ethanol fuel...

There was a website that displays gas prices as well as blends ( ethanol/ non ethanol) by zip code. There are 4 stations in my area still selling 100% gas. Lucky for me, one is just down the street. People are always filling up their boats and power sport tanks there. They literally drive from miles away to get it.

:clueless: ANY one have any luck or clue as to where this website might be?
I asked some friends and gear-head neighbors and it seems I have stirred quite a pot; nobody has the same answers and everyone is dyin' to know more about any website that tracks where ethanol free fuel might be available.  Thanks in advance!

So, I notice a number of "airfields" on the list.  What are the legalities of running avgas in a vehicle?  Anyone know?
