You need to check the Body numbers first.  Find out what exactly you have.

thanks for the info guys.... Unfortunately, I bought the car knowing it had non-numbers matching 440 -4 speed.  Was orignally a 340 car (grand coupe).  Hell, the original Vig Tag may be now be in Europe, Canda, or South America for all I know.  All I know is the car was inspected when I bought it from the seller, and I had  the Police officer from the courthouse inspect it before I bought it, and the title and Vin Tag matched.  Now it don't...... Guess I have a very expense parts car ......  Lucky me. :sadwavey:

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

thanks guys..... appreciate the help.   But would it not appear that I am driving a stolen vehicle by driving a car that has a VIN # that doesn't even come close to matching it  ???

Only thing I can think of is the Tech guys really hated my father who would go in from time to time after he had his car worked on.... Naturally they were always in a hurry when they did the work, but couldn't get to it for several days after he dropped it off, even when they said they were actually working on it. He would stop by the dealership after work to check up on the car, and he knew when they were lying to him about working on it.  HE also gave em serious hell when they tried to shortcut or do half ass work on his cars.  The head service guy really hated him, but after the first several "blow ups" he knew not to have his techs due a "rush jobs" on  my dads cars.

Maybe he had it removed to get back  at my father ??  All I know is that the front windshied has never been cracked or replaced, and the dashboard has never been out of the car (at least not by me).  Besides, why would someone go through the trouble of stealing a VIN tag and then replace it ??  Who does that ??

That would be one good explanation. And by putting another tag in place, they might insure that you didn't notice it until much much later.

If anybody did bother to run the VIN (instead of just the tags) it would look stolen, although it would stolen by a guy who was really stupid. That VIN is for something like a Polara, which is not an easy mistake to make.

:iagree:  At first I would think if they didn't like your dad then they would put sugar in his gas tank, scratch the car, etc...but then they probably knew he would come to the shop and get mad at them.  If this was them, it was a slick little trick they did.  Would have taken some effort to do this though...

Did you ever have the dash replaced in your car?  Just curious....   :dunno:

I was wondering that too. It would take some work to replace the VIN tag with the windshield and the dash pad in place.

Yeah, I was wondering of there was a replacement dash put in and maybe the previous person put in a VIN tag lying around as it was better than not having one at all there.  Who knows...  :dunno:

I could see someone doing that if it was part of the revenge scenario the member mentioned, but not as a mistake. Even back then, they had to know that's a serious crime. Unless maybe they had some fresh outta high school kid who didn't know any better  :dunno:

Thanks guys for the input..... I am going to go to the local county courthouse and report this.... I don't see how doing anything else will help.  I can speculate all I want, but the reality is, it is what it is. - the VIN tag doesn't match, and I need to get this fixed somehow. Why the devil would someone take the time to put another VIN on the car is beyond me........  If i can't fix it, then I guess I screwed......  Just another bad decision in a long list of bad decisions in my life..... I wish I had a nickel for every time I .........If Im unsuccessful, I obviously will have to part it out or use is for spare parts if I ever buy another barracuda (not likely). thanks for all your input......

Don't get too discouraged.
The government can reissue and new vin tag that will go on your door jamb.
It will take a little time but it is a relatively easy process.
Your local DMV will lead you through the process.

It's not a parts car yet. You have the title and the car, you can get the new vin.   No problems.

Do you have pictures of your car anywhere on the site yet?
Would love to see what your working on.

I never heard of a Gran Coupe with a 340.

Do you have the VIN sticker on the driver's door still?

You sure that VIN on your dash pad is correct?  That doesn't look like a valid E-body VIN tag.

If you read back in the beginning, he has had someone switch vin tags. It is not an ebody vin tag.
Also, according to the vin he gave, BH,  It is not a Gran Coupe.
It is a standard barracuda.

Still waiting to see the fender tag readout.

As I mentioned earlier in my initial post, I bought the car without fender tag......  Guy that I bought it from in the early 90s took old engine out and put in late model police interceptor 440 and coupled it with an A833 4 speed trans.  Can't get to car till the weekend......

Oh yeah, no fender tag. I forgot that.

Still, Bh code is a barracuda.  Not a Gran Coupe.

if the numbers on the radiator support and the cowl match the last 6 numbers on your title and registration then you should be ok. If it were my car, I would "remove" that invalid tag on the dash. Would rather have nothing there than the wrong tag. Also wouldnt be surprised if it were just glued in place, if someone did it in a shop, and probably in a hurry (or didnt have the time to put too much effort into it).
Of course I would also ask someone in your local registration department how "hypothetical" situations like this are handled in your state. Probably requires another inspection by a state official, and maybe a police report for a stolen tag?
Good luck whatever happens
