VIN Tag # - where else on car could it be stamped ?
« on: March 25, 2012 - 02:24:11 PM »
Have a interesting and serious dilemma here.. I was trying to sell my 1970 Barracuda.  I bought it back in 1993.  They inner fender tag was never with the car.  My title and registration read BH23GOBXXXXXX  (blocked out last 6 digits).  Now I just checked the VIN tag on the car and it reads DP2311OBxxxxx.

It seems somewhere, at sometime over the last 19 years someone switched my VIN tag.  If someone were to steal it, why would they try to replace it with another, and from a Dodge no less ?   Not to sound naive, but Why would someone want a VIN tag without a title ?

Is there any other place on the car that would have the VIN # stamped ??  frame rails ?  Package tray ?

The car has been sitting outside for a while, and has been in 2 different states ....... I'm going to check with the DMV in both states to see if they have either tag on record (right after I quit throwing up......).

There will be a vin stamp on your radiator support. Usually on the top.

The other place is on your cowl. Above your firewall. Usually next to the plastic screen for the vent holes.

Is the vin tag on your car attached to the dash with rivets?

Do you remember ever looking at your correct vin tag in the past?

Odd thing to switch out like that.

Curious to know if your body numbers match your title.

Any chance you could post a pic of these locations ??  (please block out the numbers, for obvious reasons)

Don't remember looking at the VIN tag recently.  Has been in storage for many, many years.

It is attatched to the dash with rivets..... Round ones.  Not the rosette rivets either.

the spots he is talking about I believe are only  the last few numbers of the vin not the complete vin,,you can look at the drivers door to see if it still has the decal that will have the complete vin but I dont think it is any were else unless you find the build sheets

One thing that may help is to contact Barry Washington, or check his site, to see if he has any info on the VIN you think should be on the car.

This is the cowl.

This is the radiator support,
Notice the model(B), year(1), and vin numbers are present and upside down.

Oh, don't be worried about posting the vin numbers.
I own mine, it's in my garage, titled, registered, tagged.

To copy the numbers and try to register a faked car would bring up red flags in the national database as a double.
I am sure there are ways to fake cars but the Gov makes it pretty hard to get around their regulations.

If you loose your vin tag, you will have to get a new Government issued vin tag.
You don't want to loose that one.
Look around in your parts!!

I just remembered something..... back in 1995 I rebuilt the motor.  Couldn't get the damn thing to start, so I took it to the local chrysler dealership.  They had it for 4-5 days.  They got it running, and I put it in storage shortly thereafter.   I wonder if one of the shop guys decided to perform the switch-a-roo back then.  I never really checked the vin afterwards.... never felt I needed to.  Has been sitting in storage pretty much since then.

There should also be a partial VIN on the transmission and the engine block.

The last digits of the VIN is also stamped on the engine, along the oil pan, passenger side about half way. The last digits can also be found on the tranny, on the passenger side as well. If you are lucky, you might found the production broadcast sheet. Places to look to found those sheets are 1) Under the passenger rear seat  2)  Under the passenger bucket seat  3) Behind the glove box compartment.  If you have round rivets on your dash, something happened. But, to remove the tag, they had to remove the windsheid OR tilt the dash, replace the VIN tag and re-install the dash.  The only other place where you can found the COMPLETE VIN is inside the driver door.  Good luck.  Robert

thanks for the info guys.... Unfortunately, I bought the car knowing it had non-numbers matching 440 -4 speed.  Was orignally a 340 car (grand coupe).  Hell, the original Vig Tag may be now be in Europe, Canda, or South America for all I know.  All I know is the car was inspected when I bought it from the seller, and I had  the Police officer from the courthouse inspect it before I bought it, and the title and Vin Tag matched.  Now it don't...... Guess I have a very expense parts car ......  Lucky me. :sadwavey:

Bunch of things:

If the real VIN is BH23GOB, then it was a 318 car, not a 340.

If it's in good shape, it's not a parts car. It's just missing a lot of collector value.

I can't imagine what a dealer tech would want a 318 VIN for. Not saying you're wrong, I just can't figure out why they would want to nab it.

If it was a Gran Coupe when you bought it and it had a factory 340 then a VIN of BP23H0B sounds right. BH23G0B would just be a regular 318 Barracuda
1972 Cuda 340 4 barrel 4 speed that looks like a 71
2006 Dodge Charger R/T Daytona
2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel 4X4
2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible (Kidmobile)
1972 Dodge Charger 318 auto
1970 Challenger 440/727 auto
1973 Plymouth Duster 340/auto (Making it Panther Pink for the wife)
2006 Honda Civic Hybrid (It doesn't save gas, it just diverts it to the Cuda/Challenger)
