You can get Lucas at Advanced Auto, $15 is good for 3-4 oil changes.

Good timing for this post.  I'll be needing oil very soon.  I've heard that there's a diesel oil that has a high zinc content.  Anyone know what that is?  I've also heard that the zinc additives aren't as good as the oil that already has the zinc in it....just what I've read...don't know if there is any truth behind it.

I've been using Shell 15-40 Rotella diesel motor oil in one of my Challengers for several years now. It is available everywhere and cheap.  But I've heard the zinc content is being cut even in diesel motor oils so I'm not sure if that is still a good choice.
I use Valvoline VR-1 Racing oil in my V code.  It is advertised as having a high zinc content.  It is also widely available.
Royal Purple is supposed to be pretty good, and not hard to find at Auto parts stores.  It is pricey though, a few weeks ago I saw it as O'Reillys and it was over $8 a quart! :22yikes:

For the initial 500 break in miles following a motor rebuild, my builder has always recommended straight 30 weigth motor oil (non detergent) and thereafter I am planning to go with an oil such as Brad Penn with a Zinc additive.

Last time I checked, which was about a year ago, Mobil 1 15w-50 synthetic (walmart 5qt jug) had a pretty high zinc content.

Why would running a non detergent be good right after a an engine rebuild? I would think that after a rebuild you would especially want to capture and suspend the small metal particles and send them to the filter. If you had a non detergent, i would think the particles would just be floating throughout the engine with no guarantee that when you change the oil and filter your getting them all out of the engine.

Only time to use non detergent would be in a lathe or gear box, where you want the particles to fall to the bottom so there not being pushed through the bearings. Seems like there would be far to many places for the particles to get caught an engine (lifter valley, heads, etc..).

same, this is what ive always used with newly rebuilt engines, and using a high zinc assembly lube
