Truck advice/opinions
« on: April 05, 2012 - 07:14:01 PM »
I know we all love mopars but I am looking at the possibility of a newer truck and not sure I want to stick to a Ram. Currently I own a 01 off road ram with 125000 miles and the body is falling off. I have owned this truck since 02 and have some major problems with it. I bought it used and thankfully bought an aftermarket warranty with it as the tranny went, front end has been totally replaced(some parts multiple times), all u-joints,a/c doesn't work, transfer case, radiator, etc. The truck has never been off road and really see's less than 10000 a year. I am looking at stepping up to a 2500 and checking out GM and Dodge. A friend has a 05 Chevy 2500 crew that is loaded and a 6.0 with 750000 miles on it that he wants $15,000 for. The only thing is it has a salvage title. The guy that painted my car did all the repairs on the truck and I totally trust his work and I also know the damage was limited to box and cab. My other option is that I have a dealer friend that will take me to the auction and find a 05 or 06 Ram. I am looking for what you think of salvage cars or reliability issues on 05 or 06 ram 1500 0r 2500. Thanks.

My experience is the opposite , I have always had problems with GM trucks & really cannot understand why 1/2 the Mopar guys I know buy them at all . I have had 4 Cummins Rams in a row , they have been far better on fuel & the repairs have been very minimal brakes U joints etc , the Hubs can be an issue on them but that seems to be the worst problem they have . I would not hesitate to buy another Ram , more the opposite that I would hesitate to buy anything else . I do not buy Automatics BTW

I bought my `04 Ram 2500 used with 16k miles on it and now have over 100k with very few problems.I did have to replace the ball joints at 80k but it has been plowed since new.I also had a couple broken valve springs replaced under warranty, otherwise just  basic wear and maintence items.

I think it was the 2006 model year that Dodge went to a 24 valve system. I may
be wrong on what was  changed. But I do know that the mileage on the Cummins dropped dramatically.
It may have been an emissions issue. A close friend of mine had owned Rams for years, bought a new one
and within 6 months traded it in on a GM because the mileage was so lousy.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

We sell more bowtie parts then ram parts by 4-2 -1 at the shop. Now I cant complain about GM's 5.3's but the rest of the truck falls apart.
Personally I LOVE chebby trucks.... because we make tons of $$$ off them. JUst sayn'

Ive had two ram trucks over the past 10 years, and put 175k miles on them total, and really only had regular maintenance. They were a 1500SLT and now a SRT10. My experience with them has been great. I even bought my 19 year old son a 2009 hemi last year and he loves it.
That said, I'm taking delivery of a 2012 Tacoma next week and am trying to sell my SRT. Believe it or not, Ive seen lots of used 2005-2006 tacos asking almost as much as I am for my SRT!  The tacos were $25k trucks new, and the SRT was $50k (but I paid a LOT less since I bought it used with 3k miles on it).

If you're going to pick up a used Ram then I'd recommend 06 and up. They started using the MDS on the Hemis then and it improved gas mileage.

I forgot that dodge repaired a major issue in the a/c blender box on my sons truck, even though it was out of warranty. Comped it to us and I made sure to give him a good tip. Would have been an $800 repair, and the service rep advised getting the extended warranty because the evaporator will be going next.
Turns out the newer trucks use a very different electrical system that doesnt use separate relays? All built into central modules?

The 24 valve Cummins started around 98 , in 06 they introduced the larger 6.7 Cummins  but with emissions deisel regen systems  , that is what kills the milage .
I should build a truck , I love the Quad cab 2000 with rear disc but want the 95-97 engine with the inline pump , & the engine brake off the 07 up , with Laramie interior & movable pedals etc , different parts from all the best years !!
