MP distributor with emissions equipement

My original 73 318 distributor is looking pretty rough.  Instead of trying to restore it right now, I want to run a MP distributor instead.  I have one that looks brand new.  It was on a 360 I used to race and only has a couple hundred miles on it at most.  I would swap out the ID plates so it looks basically stock.  Is there a reason the MP distributor won't work right with the factory NOX and EGR systems?  If I do run this distributor, how should I time the engine?  Should I use the stock initial timing or set it to max timing like I did on my 360?

The only difference I think is the mechanical advance curve. If it pings from advancing too fast, you could use the springs from your original dist and I believe it would then behave the same as original.  :2cents:

I think some original distributors also have the capability to advance the timing a lot more then a performance unit.  I thought I read something about replacing the advance plate with one that would allow less max timing in a performance build.  That and the advance rate were the things I was wondering about.

if it has a shorter advance curve that should help you , I would time at 3000 rpm to 36-38* , a shorter curve will give more timing at idle which usually helps

As long as it doesn't struggle to start when the engine is warm I should be good then.  Thanks
