Driver's side remote mirror

I have a 70 Challenger with the driver's side remote mirror that won't stay adjusted. I can move it with the knob so I can see behind me from the drivers seat but after a couple of minutes of driving it moves just enough that I have to keep readjusting it. Everything seems to be snug, nothing loose or floppy, is there something I can do to fix this?

Are you adjusting it with the knob on the door panel? If so, just for kicks adjust the mirror with your hand. Maybe one of the three cables isn't playing nice.

Yes, I am adjusting it with the knob on the door panel, but I also tried moving the mirror itself without using the adjusting knob, and it always moves out of adjustment after just a couple minute of driving.

I'm not an expert, but I've had a few mirrors apart, and the only thing I can think of is one of the cables is binding. Move the mirror with your hand in all directions as far as it will travel, and see if that frees it up.

is the knob nice and tight attached to the doorpanel ?  slop will cause the same.

I'll try that MEK, and yes the knob is tight against the door panel Dutch, thanks. I just wanted to see if this was a commonly known problem and if so what is the fix. I guess I'll be taking the door panel off and see what I can figure out. Thanks for your input.

This really isn't a common problem with the driver's side mirror. The passenger's side is another story.

I wonder if you could take it out, hang it so that cable is vertical, and hit it with some penetrating oil and let it drain through the wires.

My drivers side mirror would vibrate around even if you held the remote steady.  It basically made it worthless.  Mine is a 71 - 74 mirror (I think the 70 mirrors are different).  I was able to move the glass all the way to one side to get to the two screws behind the glass (it was easier with a regular screwdriver instead of a phillips).  After that what I found was that the glass pivots on a ball and socket type arrangement and it appears that the ball has worn off whatever friction type coating it had on it and there was enough slop that the glass would move becuase of no tension on the wires.  I first tried to put some RTV on the ball to take up the gap but that didn't work.  So I took it back apart and pried up each of the 3 little feet and stuffed small chunks of rubber under each of the feet.  What that did was put back more tension on the wires.  I put it back together and it works pretty good!  Here's a picture.



It's not perfect but its at least useable now and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new mirror.
