New Member with a question also
« on: April 08, 2012 - 04:55:18 PM »
Hi glad to join this website and to be able to look at all the information on here. I am 27 male from California. Grew up with my step dad having a 1969 fastback Barracuda. Well I decided that i wanted to get  one for myself sometime soon, this is the reason i found this forum.  I found an ad on Craigslist http://sacramento.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=barracuda&srchType=A&minAsk=5000&maxAsk= and was wondering what you guys thought about this, There is no pics but i am going to go look at it tomorrow. Another this is that my bank is going to finance me for my car loan and they said that they would need a NADA report to do this. When i look it up there is no option for 1968 notch back, just fastback and hemi if i remember correctly. Is there a reason why? Well i hope to get some responses thanks!

First, welcome to Cuda-Challenger.  It's the best group of mopar folks on the web.  And, any older Barracuda is always a welcome addition here in my opinion.

I'd go to your bank with the closest thing you can find from NADA.  They may accept that.

I would ask the owner what kind of maintenance has been done over past few years.  By now, I'd have to bet it should be on it's third or fourth set of ball joints and tie rod ends and such.  Make sure you try all the lights, windshield wipers, and usual equipment.  How soon is it up for inspection?  If they are willing, have them pull all 4 wheels off and inspect the brakes to make sure they are working properly, or take it to a service station and have it inspected.  I had that done on a car for about $50 a few years ago, on the east coast.

Good luck, and post pictures.

Have you looked at many others yet?  Took me about a year.  Spent about 6 months watching the internet, and reading sites like this.  Then I started looking at cars (and greasing the skids with the wife).

I'd be careful not to get too enamored with the first car you go look at.  It's easy to overlook some serious underlying flaws if you find yourself infatuated.  You might drag your step dad along and get his opinion as well, if he's around, and willing.  I bet he'd be happy to lend a hand if he's a mopar guy.

Good luck.

Well

First thing that comes to mind is why not try to find a fastback instead of a notch, just curious?
Second from the description it sounds like a decent car for around that price. But pics will help ofc.

and finally third if your close You need to go to Fling!

Might find a decent project there, or change your mind on what model you want.
WANTED 71 cuda / barracuda project. Prefer Black but open.

When I bought my last Jeep the bank was reticent to finance it until I got it appraised. They were then willing to finance it at the selling price.

My credit union said that as long as they can get a NADA price then I would not need an appraiser to come out.

Thanks for all the reply's, I wish i could make to Fling but unfortunately i can not. But I did go look at the car today, and seem to me to be a good deal, But i am not a processional when it comes to classic cars. So here are some pics and you guys can let me know what you think. The car is 5500 right now and runs good. He even pointed out that this Barracuda has the "gills" trim, never heard of it but you can see them on the bottom of the doors near the back tires.

The engine was really clean, matching numbers. All original interior, there are some cosmetic issues inside and out, but not rust holes in the body or really and dents that I could see. I wasn't really a huge fan of Notchbacks but after seeing one in person today I am coming around to them. Really cool car to me. I would have like to get a pic of the engine but forgot sorry about that.

Let me know what you think.

Nice project, I like the year and think it would be a fun restoration. Some surface rust under the vinyl but all metal can be cleaned ,worked ,and or replaced in large panels or small patches depending on how much there is. I like the argent surround on the tail panel. I would double check the underside for cancer. She looks pretty good on the topside.

The "notchback" was called a "coupe" by Chrysler Corp. The fastback, convertible and coupe were all offered in 1968. If you're trying to find the listing in a classic car NADA book, try looking under "coupe".

Does it seem like a fair price? Also if I do decide to pick this Barracuda up, what do you guys reccomend to work on first? My goal is make it Black on Black, (personal preference) Should I do the outer work or work the interior first?

Thanks

Body work and paint is skilled labor.  It will take a lot of time and/or cost a lot of money.

Interior work is pretty simple.  Its mostly unbolt/unscrew part X and either restore or replace it.

Also if you want a quality paint job you'll need to remove the entire interior so if you do the interior first, you'll be doing it twice.

I know it is probably tough to say but can you give me estimates on how much body work can range in pricing. Im not trying make a show car, but I would like to make the body nice and give it a reallly good paintjob. I don't want to spend more than $10000 more if I buy this vehicle. I just want a nice. Lean ride for a spare car and maybe pass it down in the future to my kid.

You sound like me a few years ago. Bodywork and paint is a difficult subject, but I used to take my car to resto shops and ask for just "a nice paint job." Generally, they don't want to do that, because anything that doesn't look VERY good reflects badly on them when they're trying to sell other jobs. Then I'd take the car to regular body shops, but they don't want to do classic cars because they know we're going to be picky, and they just want to crank cars out for insurance claims.

Realistically, I think $5000 is a bare minimum you can expect to spend for paint alone. Prep is expensive, buf if you can do it yourself you can save some money, although most shops won't guarantee paint if they didn't do the prep.

Just a word of Caution...Anybody that is worth anything when it comes to reputation as far as bodywork/paint goes, will NOT paint a car that the OWNER has done bodywork to.

This isn't to belittle your work, but rather he/she doesn't want to have their rep ruined by making your shotty bodywork shine. This happened to me once. Never again. If I can't do the mud work, then I won't paint it.
