a few paint questions using PPG
« on: April 09, 2012 - 12:23:15 PM »

I called my local paint shop and had them look up fk5 with no luck, then tried 2135 which worked.

then came the questions which I dont know much about;

-will one gallon be enough? I read somewhere that 5 coats is good, plus I need to do the under-carriage.

-do I want to use color as base-coat?

-I asked if he could match the original paint on deck lid and he told me that it's best to mix as specified and leave it be, the positive on this is that he can then mix more anytime and it will be an exact color match for touch ups...  Sound good?

-Lastly, $300 a gallon ok price?

Thanks for the continued help!!!

She's not cheap and the PPg reducer adds to the cost It is 1:1 mix ratio and clear coat is  :money: :money: :money: :money: But the paint goes on smooth with great coverage and dries rapidly above 65 degress... by far the best IMHO.

You can probably save a little money by not painting the underside bodycolor.  You could use a less costly paint on the bottom and go the factory overspray route.  That's one of two major mistakes I made on my car.  I really wish the underside wasn't bodycolor.

Burdar; what would you have used on the underside?

If you guys used base coat, did you need to clear coat all of it? under, trunk, firewall... is the clear a must with base coat.   Should I use acrylic urathane or enamal on all parts and switch to base coat when I get to main body  :clueless: :dunno:

I should have had a paint sprayed onto the underside that was the same color as the factory primer.  Then when the rest of the car was painted, the underside would have gotten body color overspray.  That's how it would have looked from the factory.  It just depends on what look you want.

I believe clear is a MUST if you are using a 2 stage system.  Some people use a single stage for the door jambs, engine comp, trunk and underside.  I'm not sure why exactly...cheaper?  I would think you could have trouble with the paint matching when you use two different paint systems.

I like the look of  undercoating, it looks clean and it will turn down the noise.I think a painted  underside would get chipped easy,why paint the rear wheel wells nice and then undercoat them.If you are going to shows and putting mirrors under the car then I could see why someone painted the underside.

you can always shoot ppg off brand omni alot cheaper and you can use single stage paint that will cut the cost big time. omni looks good just dont cover as great

I've actually had better results with omni base/clear than ppg. I don't find ppg blends as well when color matching.  Also, 3 gallons sounds like a bit much. I painted a whole fire truck with less than 2. BASF paints are a lot better than ppg now too, the new stuff anyway.

by time you paint the whole under body engine compartment and cut everything in plus the whole car it will be three gallons. unless you are trying to cut cost down and have a THIN coat of paint

Here is what I am thinking at this point;
dp401lf in dark grey
1 qtr concept urathane for underside, stop at firewall seam and spray up to bottom of front rails.
For the rest of the car (a long way down the road) go base/clear, 2-3 gal.

Sound good?  :dunno:

Bedliner undercoat sounds nice, maybe tape off main frame rails for a nicer more polished look!   :clueless:
I plan on re-welding all the joints on the bottom side... has anyone else done this??  will I make it too ugly in the process of tightening up the chassis?

Are you talking 3 gallons of color? or 3 gallons of mixed paint? Either sounds way high to me
but if you're talking underside and all I could see 3 gallons of mixed paint.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I completely agree.

I was talking in gallons of straight color 1.5 gals. Mixed with reducer more like 3 gallons

I used 2 gallons of just paint for a total of 4 gallons when reduced,the car was painted inside and out but not the underside,between both sides of the hood front and back of both valances,rear deck lid, latch tray and support,side marker bezels,and inside of doors I did not have much paint left, the trunk area alone will eat up a lot a paint if covered good.
