what works best for cleaning door panels
« on: April 10, 2012 - 11:22:54 PM »
Black interior, has been sitting for years without cleaning...they are in great shape I just can't seem to get them looking good, especially in the grain/texture...what do you guys use to get them looking right? I even tried a pressure wash and that didn't work either

I've read about people using leather cleaner on them. If they've turned chalky, then I don't thinl there's much you can do, though.

Try paint thinner, if that doesn't work, try laquer thinner,
If that doesn't work, try Zylene or zylol.

Try these products first on the rear of the panel to make sure they do not dis color or melt the plastic.

I have used each of these and had no ill effects.

Actually, there is a guy here that used a heat gun and made a set of chalky panels look really good!

I would get a bristle brush and scrub real hard with Simple Green.
Then another scrub with Wax & Grease remover.

Solvents can be hard on plastics. Especially if they're old.

Here's the one about the chalky panels.

Solvents are definitely hard on plastic.
I should have mentioned to use water based cleaners first.

I used warm soap and water, Simple Green, Oil Eater Degreaser, mineral spirits, and some Macquire's Vinyl cleaner.  I used several different bristle brushes, but you need to be careful as you can remove the grain if you really scrub hard.

Mostly I would spray the panel with one of the cleaners (soapy water, degreaser, simple green, Macguires), then wipe it in with a rag dipped in warm water.  Let it sit for half an hour and scrub/rinse it off.  I'd let it dry, then move on to the next cleaner.  After 2 or 3 cleanings I'd rub the whole panel down with mineral spirits and let it set.  I had the panels out of the car for 2-3 weeks cleaning them all.

This is what they looked like before and after:
Seat hinge covers:

Door panel:

For the black panels (console, kick panels, etc) I followed the same cleaning regimen and then I applied about 6 coats of Macguire's Back to Black.  This is rub on, let sit, rub off.  After the panel dries, repeat.  This really helped to even out the color and eliminate the dulling.

This is a side by side of the treated console, and the untreated door (both had been cleaned just no b2b applied to the door)

Mr Clean Magic Eraser.

Can't say I've tried it in a car, but I have seen it clean up and restore some pretty nasty textured surfaces in kitchens and bathrooms. They only cost a few bucks to try.

Years ago we had used magic eraser to clean dark stains from grease/oil/hydro fluid on flat grey military aircraft.  It worked just as good as JP8 (jet fuel) on a rag surprisingly! I'll definitely second the vote to give those a try...  Good idea HP2!

I too gave them a good scrubbing/cleaning then used this stuff. Works great on black panels! Just wipe off the excess and go!

Great suggestions guys!
I have a method that worked pretty well with similar results.

Easy off oven cleaner
Woolite & warm (hot) water
Scrub brush
Lexol leather/vinyl cleaner

Best,

I used a Mr. Clean "Magic Eraser" on mine and they look brand new again.  They are cheap and not a lot of work.
