R/T standard equipment vs optional
« on: April 12, 2012 - 08:31:18 PM »
While researching a friends early (October 1969)V code car, I found a few things that didn't quite make sense to me. :clueless: :dunno:

Was a rallye hood standard equipment on an R/T?
Wouldn't it say so on the broadcast sheet?
When you ordered a 4 speed car, was a pistol grip standard equipment?

Does the Pistol Grip get identified on the build sheet only in the case of a 3 speed?

...
Thanks,
Dan

Wasn't the 3 speed a black ball shifter knob, not a Pistol Grip?  :clueless:
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Yes it was.

Should be, if they have remember to put it on or some times they have put it on tag too, see these two examples:
No J54 tag or sheet: http://www.arts-attic.com/automobiles/70challenger/70challenger.htm
J54 on tag: http://www.pantherpink.com/fm3004.htm
I can't see any other clue why it's some times and some times not?

Pistol grip not available with 3 speed at all.

Ok..so dumb question.
This 440-6 pack R/T car I am researching is an oddball to the rule, following the one example you cite.
The J54 is not on the fender tag, and it's not on the build sheet, as described.
Was there ever a case where an R/T car could have come with a flat hood?

My car was built in oct-69 and it has the original R/T hood on it but there is no code for it on the FT nor on the build sheet :2cents:

My thought on this is that anything could have been built as a option-delete, so I'm sure that the R/T hood could have been deleted in favor on a flat hood. The next question is, where would that show in the paperwork?

Does a stock 440-6 pack with stock intake/air cleaner fit under a flat hood?

Good point. I don' t think so. That is probably why all Hemicudas & 440-6 Cudas came with shakers (the rallye hood on Cudas are lower the those on Challys). And I don't think you could have a 3 speed behind a 440-6. Bottom line, the rallye hood was standard equipement on any R/Ts. Optional was the shaker hood (N96) and I head that a few R/Ts came with T/A hoods, (N94).  On my 71 R/T, code J54 appears on the fender tag and on the built sheet as well.

Dan, from the nature of your questions, I assume that your friend is not the original owner, but that he'd at least like to believe the car is unmolested?

The shaker hood was standard on hemi cudas but not V code cudas.  I've seen a couple V code cudas with original rally hoods, though most seem to have shakers either originally optioned or added to the car later.

First time I see one 440-6 'Cuda without a Shaker hood...   Hey, I never said I was perfect!   Oh Well...

Mine is a factory R/T with a flat hood. It is an oddity though. Mine came with the flat hood, no R/T badge on the trunck and no wood grain in the door panels. My dad bought the car in 76 and remembers when the original owner bought it. He can't remember the reason it came with the hood it did but remembers that's the way it came crime the dealer. It is a oct or nov 69 build car

You can tell the built date if you have the fender tag. On the second row, (from the bottom), your 4th code, (from left to right), is the built date.  It is a 3 digit code that will start with 12 possibilities, (month), followed by day. 1=January, 2=february, 3=mars, 4=april, 5=may, 6=june, 7=july, 8=august, 9=september, A=october, B=november, C=december. For exemple, 219 would be february 19, or B23 would be november 23. Would love to see the built sheet from your car.

Wow! Great responses!
My friend pitted this car in the 70s/early 80s and purchased the car from the racer (Craig Cates) at the time.
I believe the racer may have been the original owner, or at the least, the second owner.

The car is a 70 V-code 440-6 pack, 4 speed Dana track pack car.
The car has an original shaker hood on it right now, and since his car is not coded for it, we both wondered what hood originally came on the car.
Since I decoded the build sheet, I can't seem to figure out this lil anomaly.

Is there any documentation to verify that V-code cars come standard with shakers or rallye hoods?
This certainly would be an oddball if it were a flat hood car.
I have to ask him if he has the fresh air control for the interior.
I will edit his build sheet to remove some info, and post a pic or two.

If there were a build sheet I would post it up. It is an LA car and most of those don't have the sheets. Tag says B10
