sending unit ground strap

Is the ground strap absolutley nessesary?  I already have continuity from the sender to the fuel line...I checked.  The sender grounds through the tank and straps.  Was the factory ground strap just a backup ground? 

Originally, I tried to use a 4" strap.  I bent the line closer to the sender then it was originally but still couldn't get the 4" to work.  Wade said his original strap was 7.5" long.  The repops are 8".  I don't know what changed back there but 8" will be way too long.  Since I have continuity, can I just go without one?

Darren,

  You fuel sender unit should NOT be shorted to ground thru your tank. When the rubber gasket on the outside of the sender is used, this isolates the sender from ground. So the pick-up tube is not grounded until you install the ground strap.

If you have ground it should work.  I would think the metal collar would hit both the tank and fuel sender.

The lock ring touches the sender and the tank.  The post that the sender wire attaches to is insulated from the sender body.  I originally thought something was wrong too.

Precisely, so the sender should be isolated from the grounding of the gas tank.

If you proceed, your fuel gauge will read full at all times.

The gasket goes between the sending unit and the tank...the locking ring still touches the tank and the sending unit.
