Accessory wiring power source
« on: April 17, 2012 - 03:24:56 PM »
Hey all, when I had my seats recovered I had heated elements installed. The elements have power source wires that are really thin but also came with 10A blade fuses for each circuit (left/right). There was of course no wiring installation/requirements with the kit so I'll have to contact them separately.

In any case, I'd like to hook these up to my 70. What is the proper location to connect an accessory such as this? There are a couple of brown (I think) connectors under the dash that look to be extra for such a need but I'm not sure. Also I don't want to overload any individual circuit and I would expect that heater elements would have a reasonable current draw.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks.

well you could run a wire from the batt to a switch and fuse. Or are you trying to run from the dash? On the fuse box you have a space that says batt, which is hot all the time or accessory.  Or you could run off the red mould dash feed , i believe thats hot all the time. I would have a light on the switch so you know when the heat is on.

I would run a new wire from the starter solonoid to the seat wire via a relay (added) under the dash, then power the relay from one of several options that are on/off with the ignition switch then thru a dedicated on/off switch for the seat heat.  If your wiring system is stock it is so weak you don't want to add the extra burden of seat heat.  The relay system will ease this concern.

I second skunkworks suggestion. I would run it's own dedicated power circuit. I wouldn't add any current load onto the bulkhead connector.

Sound advice. I do want it only hot with the key. I'll go with the relay approach.

Thanks.
