Make sure the dist shaft bushing is tight , the shaft could be loose causing the gap to vary .
Yes you could file down the tips of the reluctor to try to even them out

Just got my new MP distributor, and checked the gaps, they ranged from 0.008 to 0.016. Checked my old distributor, they were all wider but even. So I swapped the reluctors and got more even gaps on the new dist with the old reluctor - 0.008 to 0.010. So I think I can assume the shaft and bushings are all OK on the new distributor. I suppose I can just leave the old reluctor on there - any reason not too? Looks OK, not all rusty or anything.

Yeah, It's not like the reluctors ever make contact. So I would definitely re-use the old one.

OH ANOTHER TIP!
If you running a MSD Red Blaster coil that is filled with oil, don't have it mounted on its side.
These coils with oil are meant to be mounted up and down - Vertically.
The coil has an air bubble in there and that air bubble should be up at the top where the coil wire hooks onto it.
If the air bubble is on the side, then windings are exposed and you have a ruined coil.
I bought the MSD Black coil that is filled with epoxy and is made for offroad and vibration.
That coil can be laid down.
Anyways.....

Are you refering to these ?

Do I have to install this vertically..?

So, I figger, I'll go ahead and file down the reluctor points to even them out, which will slightly reduce the spin speed of the end of the reluctor. As a side benefit, since they are slightly tapered, each one will get a little wider as it gets filed down. This should make the signal to the pick-up slightly longer, which will obviously result in a longer, stronger spark, and of course more horsepower!!! I'm going to estimate 10-15 HP gain.

Also, it'll sound good on the specs of my engine...

I think I'll start marketing these - if anyone is interested in one, you can meet me at my ocean-side cabin this weekend. I'll be there for an open house as it is for sale.

It's in Arizona.

You have got to be kidding me.. I have a 440-6... - WITH A SHAKER HOOD !
How the **** am I supposed to fit a Blaster coil VERTICALLY on that?!
That can't be done... I'm gonna have to buy another coil... Great. Fantastic. I'm calm. I'm not about to take a ****ing hammer to this car. No, sir..

It's not the price, it's the shipping.
I hate waiting.

Bought the vibration one. UPS says 2-3 days, but we all know, it's gonna be a week. It's always atleast a week.
Still, probably could be worse. USPS sometimes send their cargo with a very slow rudderless raft. I suspect.

I remounted my new MDS epoxy coil on the side onto the little tab that is on my washer fluid bottle.
I think its perfect!
Hopefully you can do something like this.
After a long drive, its luke warm only.
Enjoy!

Many thanks Trevor . I've been having starting trouble . Changed the ecu and coil with no luck then I read your post . Bulls eye right on the money . I never would have thought of this . My gap was 25 thousands , set it to 8 and now it starts so easy . What's the odds your post was here when I needed it . THANK YOU for taking the time to post it to try and help others even after your car was fixed .

I have a MP distributor (mallory unit) and the gap caanot be smaller than 0.010" with full vac advance and 0.018" without vacuum advance engaged. The whoel plate wobbles when vac advance strikes in and the gap constantly changes... anyone has this problem?
