need name or code for 69-70 stock engine spray paint, please
« on: April 23, 2012 - 12:40:18 PM »

Motor was rebuilt and painted a long time ago.... I must have used the correct paint back then!  I now need to paint motor mount brackets and other attachments to match.    also, does anyone have details on what gets painted orange?   thanks!!

The engines were completely assembled before they were painted.  The fuel pumps were installed as well as the exhaust manifolds and negative battery cable.  Torque convertors were installed if it was an auto...bellhousings were installed if it was a manual trans.  I'm not sure about BB dipstick tubes.  I think it changes by year.  Your motor mount brackets should be black.  According to the fastener guide, Hemi engines had the motor mount brackets painted engine color but all other engines were black.

thanks,  so water pump, fan, valve covers, pulleys... all orange I guess.  (still need part number)

For black, using local shops; what can I use?  rustoleom semi flat black sound good?  Painted rear-end and k-frame but dont remember what I used.  :banghead:

The engine was assembled before paint but the accesories were installed after.  The exception is the exhaust manifolds, fuel pump and negative cable.  The pulleys and fan were NOT on the engine when it was painted.(the damper was painted engine color though)  The fastener guide says 40% gloss black for those parts.  I used Eastwood Extreme Chassis Black.(semi-gloss)

Here's a picture that should help you.  (Dave Walden's Challenger)

Also check out this page.  About half way down there are some good shots of the engine and the fuel pump as well as the details of the engine mount brackets and attaching bolts.

I'll play devil's advocate here. What size is your engine? I'm just asking if you know that orange is correct.

Thanks for asking, I thought all 70 cars had orange.

It's a 1970 440-6, I may as well ask about the other cars if you dont mind; 1970 318-2, 1971 318-2  :dunno:

Thanks!!

I think these are correct:

1970:
Slant 6 (both) = Blue
318 = Blue
340/4 = Orange
340/6 = Orange
383/2 = Blue
383/4 = Orange (?)
440/4 = Orange
440/6 = Orange
Hemi =Orange (Valve covers = Black Crackle)

1971
Slant 6 (both) = Blue
318 = Blue
340/4 = Orange
383/2 = Blue
383/4 = Usually Orange (Some Blue)
440/6 = Orange
Hemi =Orange (Valve covers = Black Crackle)

1972-1974
Slant 6 (both) = Blue
318 = Blue
340/4 = Blue
360/4 = Blue

340's went to blue after March or April of 71.

The 383's get a little confusing and I'm not 100% sure.  The 2-barrels were definately blue.  I think if the car was equiped with A/C it would have been blue.  The 383HP 335 horse engine were orange.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Another oddity is the 72 440 6-barrel cars.(B-bodies)  I think 3 are known to exist.  Those 440's were blue.

I believe the official names are:

Orange = Street Hemi Orange
Blue = Chrysler Medium Engine Blue

How are you going to spray it?  Spray cans or through a gun?  There's Race Hemi orange and Street Hemi orange.  Then there are variations between spray can manufactures.  Engine paint from Duplicolor doesn't look the same as engine paint from PlastiKote.  I've heard the Mopar Performance orange isn't correct...go figure.

Honestly, I'd do a google search on Moparts.  I know its been discussed there a lot.   :2cents:

THanks again guys.

I'd like to use stock mopar spray can, or what ever can matches best.  I thought this would be an easy answer question  :bigsmile: :icon16:

I've heard the Mopar paint is very thin.  Try PlastiKote Engine Enamel, #226 Chrysler Orange.  I've heard that's a good match.  I've also heard that the PlastiKote clear won't yellow like other brands if you're planning on clearing it.  The only place in my area that has PlastiKote is Car Quest.

I went with Plastikote for my valve covers, intake,  and air cleaner.  But I didn't really have anything to compare it to so, I can't speak to it's originality....looks pretty though :)
